BOSTON, Mass. (March 29, 2005) - Senior Tony Mallozzi (Westboro,
Mass.) slammed a two-RBI triple to center field as the University of
Connecticut baseball team defeated Northeastern 3-1 in 10 innings on Tuesday
afternoon at Friedman Diamond. The game-winning hit improved UConn to
14-5, while NU moves to 5-11.
Connecticut jumped on the board in the top of the first inning when
senior Jeff Hourigan (Beacon Falls, Conn.) doubled in classmate
Russ D'Argento (Marlboro, Mass.) to give the Huskies an early
1-0 lead.
NU responded in the bottom of the third when
Anthony Fantaroni scored
on a bases-loaded walk to tie the game at 1-1.
The score remained knotted at one apiece after nine and headed into
extra innings. In the top of the 10th, sophomore Matt Untiet
(Berlin, Conn.) singled and then advanced second on a single by
freshman Vin DiFazio (Hampton, N.J.). Junior Austin
Wasserman (Nashua, N.H.) then reached on a fielder's choice that
moved Untiet to third, but got DiFazio out at second. Mallozzi hit his
clutch triple to bring home Untiet and Wasserman and put UConn ahead
3-1.
Northeastern attempted to come back in the bottom of the inning, but
freshman David Erickson (Stratford, Conn.) got them to ground
into a double play and then picked off a runner at first to secure the
3-1 win and pick up his second save this season.
The UConn pitchers combined for another strong outing, allowing just
one run while totaling 10 strikeouts. Hourigan started the game,
throwing three innings with two hits, one run and six strikeouts.
Junior Tim Norton (Pascoag, R.I.) then pitched the next three
innings allowing just one hit with one strikeout, followed by
sophomore Rich Sirois (Ipswich, Mass.) who also hurled three
innings, fanning three with two hits. Erickson then closed out the
extra inning for the save.
The Huskies will next travel to New Haven, Conn., on Wednesday, March
30 to face Yale at 3:00 p.m. The game was originally scheduled for
Storrs but has been moved due to poor field conditions.
