NEW HAVEN, Conn. (March 30, 2005) – The University of Connecticut
baseball team was unable to get any offensive production from its bats
on Wednesday afternoon as the Huskies fell to in-state rival Yale by a
score of 1-0 in New Haven, Conn. UConn is now 14-6 on the season,
while the Bulldogs move to 9-7.
Yale scored its lone run in the bottom of the
fourth inning. After a scoreless opening three innings in which
neither teams were able to capitalize with runners on base, Chris
Esper of the Bulldogs hit a two-out single over the out-stretched
glove of UConn second baseman Austin Wasserman (Nashua, N.H.).
The hit drove in Jake Doyle from third, but the inning ended when
Esper was tagged out by shortstop Dennis Donovan (Center
Moriches, N.Y.) as he tried to advance to second on the play.
Sophomore Josh Farkes (Boston, Mass.)
notched two of UConn’s six hits in the game, while Yale’s Doyle went
2-for-2 and Esper went 2-for-3.
Freshman Matt Karl (Wallingford, Conn.)
registered the loss, his first decision of the season. He started the
game and threw for five innings, giving up the single run on six hits
while fanning seven. Karl was relieved by junior Joshua MacDonald
(Milford, Conn.) who closed out the last three innings with two
strikeouts and two hits. Jon Hollis picked up the win for Yale to
improve to 3-0.
Connecticut will next travel to Fairfield to play
the Stags at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 31. The Huskies will then
open their BIG EAST home schedule with they play host to West Virginia
April 2-3 at J.O. Christian Field. The two teams will meet for a
doubleheader on Saturday and a single game on Sunday with action
beginning at 12:00 p.m. on both days.
