Huskies Fall to Siena, 6-2

STORRS, Conn. (April 13, 2005) - The University of Connecticut
baseball team continued to struggle as the Huskies fell to Siena by a
score of 6-2 on Wednesday afternoon at J.O. Christian Field. The loss
is UConn's fourth in the last five games as the team moves to 20-11
overall (4-4 BIG EAST). Siena is now 9-14 (4-2 MAAC).
Freshman Matt Karl (Wallingford, Conn.) and Craig Chaput of
Siena both got off to solid starts, shutting out the opposing hitters
in the first four innings. The Saints then jumped to a 2-0 lead on a
two-run homerun over the left field wall by Matt Gidaly in the fifth.
The Huskies responded and cut the score to 2-1 in the bottom of the
sixth. Sophomore Matt Untiet (Berlin, Conn.) led off the inning
with a base on balls, and advanced to second on a single to right
center by junior Austin Wasserman (Nashua, N.H.). The two
runners then moved over a base on a sac bunt by senior Tony
Mallozzi (Westboro, Mass.). Freshman Vin DiFazio (Hampton,
N.J.) then brought home Untiet on a sac fly to center field to put
UConn on the board.
Siena answered in the top of the seventh inning with another run to
return the lead to two at 3-1. UConn tallied a run in the bottom of
the inning to cut the score to 3-2. Sophomore Larry Day
(Amesbury, Mass.) singled to left center to get on base, and moved to
third on a double by junior Josh Farkes (Boston, Mass.). Day
then scored on a sac fly by freshman Pat Mahoney (Des Moines,
Iowa).
In the top of the eighth, the Saints pulled away doubling their score
with three runs to push the lead to 6-2. Connecticut tried to rally in
the bottom of the ninth, getting runners on first and second with one
out, but then flew out and grounded out as Siena took the 6-2 win.
Chaput threw a complete game for the Saints, hurling 140 pitches with
six hits, two runs, three walks and three strikeouts. The win moved
Chaput to 1-1 this season. Karl registered the loss for UConn,
throwing 6.2 innings with three runs on seven hits, three strikeouts
and a walk. Freshman David Erickson (Stratford, Conn.) relieved
Karl in the seventh inning, and pitched a total of 1.1 innings. He
allowed three runs on two hits, struck out two and walked one.
Sophomore Ted Garry (Rochester, Minn.) pitched the ninth inning
in his team-leading 14th appearance of the season.
The Huskies will next head to New Britain, Conn., to face Central
Connecticut on Thursday, April 14 at 3:00 p.m. UConn will then travel
to South Bend, Ind., for a three-game BIG EAST series against the
Fighting Irish of Notre Dame on April 16-17. |
