NEW BRITAIN,
Conn. (April 14, 2005) - The University of Connecticut baseball team
snapped its three-game losing streak with a 6-2 win over in-state foe
Central Connecticut State on Thursday afternoon in New Britain, Conn.
Senior Jeff Hourigan (Beacon Falls, Conn.) struck out a
season-high nine batters in eight innings to move to 4-1. UConn is now
21-11 overall, 4-4 against BIG EAST opponents. CCSU falls to 9-14.
The Huskies scored in the top of the first without getting a hit as
senior Tony Mallozzi (Westboro, Mass.) bunted and reached on an
error by the pitcher. Freshman Vin DiFazio (Hampton, N.J.) then
reached on an errant throw by the third baseman on which Mallozzi came
around to score and put UConn up 1-0.
CCSU knotted the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the inning when John
Blaze hit an RBI double that scored Tom Pezzello. UConn regained the
lead with sophomore Larry Day (Amesbury, Mass.) singled to
center to get on base and then advanced to third on two wild pitches.
Day scored to put the Huskies ahead 2-1 on a single by Mallozzi.
The Blue Devils tied the game again, scoring a single run in the
bottom of the fifth to move the score to 2-2. That would be the last
time CCSU would cross home though, as Hourigan held the Blue Devils
scoreless in the next three innings while retiring nine straight
batters. In his eight innings, Hourigan allowed two runs on six hits
with three walks and nine strikeouts.
Meanwhile, the Huskies retook the lead in the sixth at 3-2 when
Mallozzi scored his second run of the game. He singled to get on base,
stole second and then moved to third and came home a wild pitch.
UConn then pulled away in the next inning when they added three more
runs to double their run total to six. Sophomore Matt Untiet
(Berlin, Conn.) led off the inning with a single up the middle, and
moved to second on a wild pitch. Junior Bryan Maler (Ansonia,
Conn.) then hit an infield single to the shortstop that scored Untiet.
After Maler stole second, fellow junior Austin Wasserman
(Nashua, N.H.) drew a walk. The two then pulled of a double steal,
putting both runners in scoring position. Mallozzi registered his
second RBI of the game on a groundout that scored Maler, and DiFazio
then doubled to right to bring home Wasserman and move the score to
6-2 in favor of the Huskies.
Junior Joshua MacDonald (Milford, Conn.) entered the game in
the bottom of the ninth and secured the UConn win, issuing one walk
while getting the final three outs. CCSU starter Nathan Cole, who
moved to 1-1 with the loss, threw a total of four wild pitches in the
game.
Mallozzi and Maler led the UConn bats both going 2-for-4. Mallozzi
scored two runs with two RBI while Maler brought home one and scored
one.
Connecticut will next travel to South Bend, Ind., to face the Fighting
Irish of Notre Dame April 16-17 in a three-game BIG EAST series. |
