KANSAS CITY (May 11) -- Bob Schaefer, a 1966 graduate of the University of Connecticut and a member of the 1965 College World Series team at UConn, earned his first win in his current tenure as interim manager of the Kansas City Royals on Thursday night. The Royals defeated Tampa Bay by a 7-5 score in a rain-shortened game.

Schaefer, who had been serving as the bench coach for the Royals, was elevated to the position following the resignation of manager Tony Pena.

Earlier this winter, Schaefer was honored by the UConn baseball program with its first Distinguished Alumni Award.

Schaefer lost his first game as interim manager by a score of 12-9 to the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday. Schaefer also served as interim manager for the Royals in 1991 and had a 1-0 record.
