Setback Against Seton Hall

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. (May 15) –
The University of Connecticut baseball team fell to Seton Hall by a
7-2 margin in BIG EAST action at Owen T. Carroll Field on Sunday
afternoon. With the loss, the Huskies fall to 31-20 overall, 10-10 in
the BIG EAST, while the Pirates move to 15-32 overall, 6-16 in the
conference.
The Huskies
opened the scoring in the top of the first as junior Austin
Wasserman (Nashua, N.H.) and senior Russ D’Argento
(Marlboro, Mass.) began the inning with back-to-back singles.
Wasserman then came around to score on an RBI groundout by senior
Tony Mallozzi (Westboro, Mass.), giving UConn a 1-0 lead.
Seton Hall
managed to tie the score, however, with a run in the bottom half of
the inning. The leadoff hitter, Anthony Seratelli, was hit by a pitch,
advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, moved to third on an error and
came home on a sacrifice fly to center by John Walsh. Walsh later gave
the Pirates a 2-1 lead with a solo homer to leadoff the fourth.
In the sixth,
Seton Hall broke the game open, scoring four runs on five hits. Casey
Hines began the inning with a single and later came around to score on
a one-out hit to right by Tim Pahuta. Mark Pappas followed with a
single to left, and then after Dan McDonald struck out swinging for
the second out, Nate Halm doubled in Pappas and Pahuta. Mike Morano
drove in Halm with a single up the middle for the fourth and final run
in the frame. The Pirates added their seventh and final run in the
eighth inning on an RBI single by Halm, who went 2-for-4 on the
afternoon with three RBI.
Connecticut
plated its second run of the contest in the top of the ninth on an RBI
single by sophomore Larry Day (Amesbury, Mass.) that scored
senior Jeff Hourigan (Beacon Falls, Conn.) who reached with a
one-out single. Day went 3-for-4 in the contest with an RBI while
Hourigan was 2-for-4 at the dish with a run scored.
Junior
Brendan McGinn (Tolland, Conn.) started for the Huskies and took
the loss (4-5), going 5.2 innings and allowing six runs, five earned,
on six hits with no walks and six strikeouts. Freshman David
Erickson (Stratford, Conn.) relieved him and pitched 2.1 innings
and allowed one run on four hits with no walks and one strikeout.
McDonald recorded the victory (4-5) for Seton Hall as he allowed one
run on six hits with two walks and seven strikeouts in eight innings
of work. Mike Santmyer pitched the ninth and allowed one run on two
hits with one walk and one strikeout.
UConn returns to
action on Tuesday, May 17, when the team will travel to Vermont for a
6:00 p.m. contest. |
