Huskies Close Out Season with 7-1 Loss to Boston College

STORRS, Conn. (May 21, 2005) - The University of Connecticut baseball team dropped the final game of its season, losing to Boston College by a score of 7-1 on Saturday afternoon at J.O. Christian Field. The Huskies conclude their 2005 season with a record setting-mark of 34-22, the most wins in program history. UConn also completes its BIG EAST season with an 11-12 record. Boston College is now 36-18, 17-8 in conference games.

Boston College got off to a fast start, scoring three runs in the first and one in the second for a 4-0 lead. The first inning included a controversial homerun hit by Drew Locke, that was first called an out when left fielder Tony Mallozzi (Westboro, Mass.) knocked the ball off his glove and into center fielder Russ D'Argento's (Marlboro, Mass.) glove. The apparent out was reversed though as the umpires at third base and home consulted and called the hit a homerun.

UConn scored in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut the lead to 4-1. Freshman Pat Mahoney (Des Moines, Iowa) reached on an error by the shortstop, and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Junior Austin Wasserman (Nashua, N.H.) then singled to right field to move Mahoney to third. D'Argento then flied out to center field, and as the fielder tried to hold Wasserman at first he overthrew the ball allowing him to move to second and Mahoney to score.

That would be the lone run scored by the Huskies though and BC starter Nate Jeanes held UConn to just five hits and one walk while striking out eight over eight innings to improve to 3-5 this season.

The Eagles added a run in the top of the seventh and two in the eighth for a final score of 7-1.

Junior Brendan McGinn (Tolland, Conn.) started for UConn but had a rough outing, pitching just two innings with four runs on six hits. McGinn registered the loss for a final record of 4-6 this season. He was relieved by freshman David Erickson (Stratford, Conn.), who pitched the next three innings with just one hit allowed. The game marked Erickson's 24th appearance this season, tying the school record for appearances in a single season.

Junior Joshua MacDonald (Milford, Conn.) then entered the game and pitched 1.1 innings with one run on three hits. Senior Jeff Hourigan (Beacon Falls, Conn.) moved to the mound from first base to finish out the game, throwing the final 2.2 innings with two runs on two hits in his final appearance as a Husky.
