Norton Earns Top Awards For Cape League Accomplishments
STORRS,
Conn. – Tim Norton (Pascoag, R.I.), an incoming senior to the
University of Connecticut baseball team, has already made a name for
himself in Husky blue and white, but this summer, he has caught
attention in maroon and white as a member of the Falmouth Commodores
of the Cape Cod Baseball League. Norton was recently named to the 2005
Baseball America Cape Cod League Top-30 Prospect list. He was
also the only player in the Cape League to receive two end-of-season
awards. He was the recipient of the John Claffey New England Top
Prospect Award and the B.F.C Whitehouse Award. Norton was ranked
29th in the Baseball America Cape Cod Prospect list. He was one
of 18 BIG EAST players that participated in the nation’s premier
amateur summer wood bat league. Norton was chosen to represent his
team in the 2005 CCBL All-Star game and was named the league’s first
Coca-Cola Pitcher of the Week.
The John J. Claffey Award, named after the late Cape League
administrator and advocate, goes out to the top prospect of a New
England College and/or one who lives in the New England region. Norton
finished second in the league in strikeouts with 77, while compiling
an outstanding 5-1 record and a 1.77 era in a team-leading 61 innings
pitched. For his efforts, he also received the B.F.C Whitehouse
Outstanding Pitcher Award. He shared this accomplishment with Andrew
Miller, a member of the Chatham A’s and a student-athlete at North
Carolina.
In 2005, Norton recorded a 2.62 ERA for the Huskies in Big East
Conference action, ranking him fifth in the league. He was named Big
East Pitcher of the Week May 23 and pitched one scoreless inning out
of the bullpen in the 2005 NEIBA College All-Star game played at
Fenway Park.
