BEAUMONT, Texas (March 4, 2006)
The University of Connecticut
baseball team fell to the Cardinals of Lamar University, 4-0, on
Saturday evening at Vincent-Beck Stadium.
Lamar’s William Delage threw a complete-game, two-hit
shutout in game four of the Lamar Classic to defeat UConn. With the
loss, the Huskies drop to 3-2 on the season while Lamar improves to
9-6.
Connecticut fell behind early, as Delage retired the side in the
first inning. He would go on to do this two more times before game’s
end. In the first inning for the Cardinals, Erik Kanaby walked, took
second on a balk by junior Rich Sirois (Ipswich, Mass.) and
advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Matt Lambeth. He scored on
Sirois' second balk of the inning to take the lead, 1-0.
Another balk by Sirios in the second innings put runners in scoring
position for Lamar. Colt Crawford hit a single to short to drive in
the Cardinals’ second run of the game. Kanaby drove in the third run
for Lamar on an RBI groundout to second base.
Sirois went five innings, allowing three runs off five hits before
being replaced by sophomore Mike Tarsi (Danbury, Conn.). Tarsi
pitched an inning of relief for the Huskies before freshman Erik
Turgeon (Palm Harbor, Fla.) came in to finish the game. Turgeon
faced nine batters in two innings permitting just one run off a solo
homer to right field by C.J. Ebard.
Senior Bryan Maler's (Ansonia, Conn.) two-out double down
the right field line in the top of the sixth inning broke up the
no-hitter Delage was maintaining.
The Lamar Classic concludes Sunday with Iona playing UConn at 11:00
a.m. and Lamar playing New Orleans at 3 p.m. Both UConn and UNO are
1-1 in the classic, while the Gaels are 0-2.
