Huskies Shutout Iona By 6-0 Score

BEAUMONT, Texas (March 5) – Senior Nick Tucci (Medford, Mass.) pitched eight innings of five-hit scoreless baseball to pick up his second win of the season as the University of Connecticut topped Iona on Sunday afternoon by a 6-0 score.

UConn improves to 4-2 on the season while the Gaels drop to 0-9.

Tucci struck out one and walked one in his performance while freshman David Erickson (Stratford, Conn.) pitched a hitless ninth to seal the win.

Senior Austin Wasserman (Nashua, N.H) and freshman Dennis Donovan (Center Moriches, N.Y.) each had two hits in the win for the Huskies.

UConn scored two runs in the fourth inning as junior Josh Farkes (Boston, Mass.) scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Pat Mahoney (Des Moines, Iowa) and senior Steven Malinowski (Berlin, Conn.) scored on a bases loaded walk to Donovan. The Huskies picked up two more in the fifth as Wasserman and Farkes each scored unearned runs.

Donovan had an RBI double in the eighth that plated freshman Erik Turgeon (Palm Harbor, Fla.) and Wasserman scored in ninth on a sacrifice fly by Farkes after reaching on a triple.

The Huskies now travel from Texas to Florida and play Mount St. Mary’s on Monday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. in Bradenton.
