STORRS, Conn. (April 4, 2006) – An April
snowstorm led to some confusion on J.O. Christian Field on Tuesday
afternoon, but after all was said and done, the Huskies came out with
a 4-2 victory over the Hartford Hawks in five innings of play. The
game was called after the top of the six on account of the snow that
had accumulated and made field conditions unplayable. The win
improves the Huskies’ overall record to 17-9 while the Hawks drop to
2-18.
Sophomore Mike Tarsi (Danbury, Conn.)
pitched a complete game for Connecticut. He pitched five innings
and allowed two runs on three hits. Tarsi fanned five Hawks and walked
just one. The win is his third of the season.
At the plate, junior Dennis Donovan
(Center Moriches, N.Y.) was 1-for-2 with three RBI. Donovan doubled
in the bottom of the second inning to extend the Huskies lead to 4-1.
He recorded his first RBI in the first inning on a sacrifice fly to
left field. He scored senior Austin Wasserman (Nashua, N.H.)
who had tripled to start the inning.
Hartford tacked on one more run in the top of the
third to bring the score to 4-2. The game ended at 4-2 after a midst
of confusion and snow. The Hawks batted in the top of the sixth
inning and tied the game at four, but do to the fact that the game was
called before the Huskies could bat, NCAA rules designate that in
order to officially count the game, you must revert back to the last full
inning of play.
UConn will travel to Marist on Wednesday
afternoon to play the Red Foxes in a non-conference game at 3:00 p.m.
The Huskies will be back home on April 7 to begin a three-game series
with BIG EAST foe Villanova.
