QUEENS, N.Y. (March 25, 2007) – St. John's used a
seven-run fourth inning to overcome an early deficit en route to a
10-7 victory over the University of Connecticut baseball team in the
final game of a three-game series Sunday afternoon at Jack Kaiser
Stadium.
UConn (8-10, 2-1 BIG EAST)
jumped out to an early lead after scoring three runs in the bottom
of the first inning. Sophomore Dale Brannon (St.
Petersburg, Fla.) drew a one-out walk before senior Larry Day
(Amesbury, Mass.) singled to left field to put runners on first and
second. After senior Dennis Donovan (Center Moriches,
N.Y.) singled through the right side to load the bases, senior
Matt Untiet (Berlin, Conn.) put the Huskies on the board with an
RBI groundout. Day then scored on a wild pitch before junior
Pat Mahoney (Des Moines, Iowa) capped the inning with a
single to center field to drive in Donovan.
St. John's (8-10, 1-2 BIG EAST)
scored its first run of the game in the top of the third to cut the
Husky deficit to two runs. Chris Joachim delivered a two-out
single up the middle to score Brian Kemp who was earlier hit by a
pitch.
In the following inning, the
Red Storm took a commanding 8-3 lead by plating seven runs in the
fourth. Brendan Monaghan produced the first run with an RBI
double, while Michael Aicardi drove in a run with a groundout to the
right side. Gil Zayas later capped the inning with a two-run
single through the left side.
St. John's added a run in each of the next two innings to take a
10-3 lead on RBIs from Aicardi and Anthony Smith.
The Huskies struck for four
runs in the bottom of the seventh to cut the Red Strom lead to 10-7.
Senior Josh Farkes (Boston, Mass.) reached base with a
one-out double to center field before coming around to score when
freshman Peter Fatse (Hampden, Mass.) singled through the
right side. After both Brannon and Day were hit by pitches in
the following at bats, Donovan singled through the left side to
score Fatse and Brannon with his third hit of the game. Untiet
then singled up the middle for the Huskies' final run of the inning.
UConn would get no closer,
however, as Red Storm reliever Colin Lynch allowed just one hit over
the final 2-1/3 innings to earn his fourth save of the season.
Red Storm starting pitcher
George Brown (2-0) earned the win after allowing four runs on six
hits in 6-2/3 innings on the hill.
Husky freshman Greg Nappo
(Madison, Conn.) (0-2) suffered the loss after being touched for
eight runs (seven earned) on seven hits in 3-2/3 innings of mound
duty.
UConn returns to action Tuesday
afternoon at 3:00 p.m. when the Huskies travel to in-state foe
Fairfield.
