STORRS, Conn. (April
2, 2007)
— University of Connecticut starting pitcher Brendan
McGinn (Tolland, Conn.) won his fourth consecutive decision as
the Huskies put the finishing touches on a four-game homestand with
a 4-2 win over ACC foe Boston College Monday afternoon at J.O.
Christian Field.
McGinn improved to 4-1 this season after allowing two runs (one
earned) on five hits in seven innings on the hill. During his last
four outings, McGinn has surrendered just five runs in 25 innings on
the hill, posting a mere 1.44 earned run average during that span.
Husky senior southpaw Ted Garry (Rochester, Minn.) came on in
relief of McGinn and pitched a scoreless eighth. Junior Matt
Karl (Wallingford, Conn.) pitched a perfect ninth to record his
team-leading third save of the season.
Boston College starting pitcher Ted Ratliff (1-1) took the loss
after giving up four runs over seven hits in 5-1/3 innings of work.
The Eagles (8-15-1) tallied the game’s first run in the top of the
second as third baseman Eric Campbell delivered a one-out home run
over the left field wall. Boston College scored another run in the
top of the third on a sacrifice fly from right fielder Johnny
Ayers.
UConn (12-12) answered with a run in the bottom of the third on a
two-out rally to cut the Eagles’ lead in half. Freshman Peter
Fatse (Hampden, Mass.) was hit by a pitch to start things before
stealing second base two pitches later. Sophomore Dale
Brannon (St. Petersburg, Fla.) collected his ninth RBI of the
season as he followed with a single to center field to plate Fatse
from second.
The Huskies struck for two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to
take a lead they would never relinquish. Freshman center fielder
Harold Brantley Jr. (Silver Spring, Md.) opened the inning with
a double into right-center before Fatse was hit by his team-leading
10th pitch of the season to put runners on first and second. Senior
first baseman Matt Untiet (Berlin, Conn.) later advanced both
runners one base with a one-out grounder to the right side. Senior
shortstop Dennis Donovan (Center Moriches, N.Y.) put the
Huskies ahead for good as he blooped a single into center field to
score both runners.
Sophomore Erik Turgeon (Palm Harbor, Fla.) gave the Huskies
some insurance in the bottom of the sixth as he notched his sixth
RBI of the year. Junior catcher Pat Mahoney (Des
Moines, Iowa) drew a walk to open the frame and took second on a
wild pitch before Turgeon laced a out-out single into right-center
for UConn’s final run of the game.
UConn returns to action Tuesday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. when the
Huskies travel to Hartford to take on the Hawks from Campus Field.
