STORRS, Conn. (April 10, 2007) — The University of Massachusetts scored a pair of runs in the top of the 10th inning to break a 4-4 tie en route to a 6-4 victory over the University of Connecticut baseball team Tuesday afternoon at J.O. Christian Field.

UMass first baseman Andy Tuetken opened the inning with a double to left field and scored the game-winning run on the ensuing play.  Winning pitcher Bryan Adamski, who moved from designated hitter to pitcher at the beginning of the seventh inning, laid down a sacrifice bunt that was thrown into shallow right field by the UConn infield in an attempt to retire him at first.  Subsequently, Tuetken scored from second base without a play and Adamski ended up at third base.  On the following play, Adamski scored an insurance run for the Minutemen as he scampered home on third baseman Ryan Franczek’s sacrifice fly into center field.

UConn (13-16) brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the 10th when sophomore third baseman Erik Turgeon (Palm Harbor, Fla.) laced a two-out double into right field.  Adamski, however, next induced freshman center fielder Harold Brantley Jr. (Silver Spring, Md.) to foul out to left field for the final out of the game.

Adamski (2-0) pitched the final four innings and allowed two hits while striking out one to earn the win.

Husky freshman Will Musson (Wethersfield, Conn.) (0-1) suffered the loss after giving up two runs (one earned) in two innings of work.  Starting pitcher Robert Van Woert (Johnson City, N.Y.) earned a no decision despite a strong outing on the hill.  Van Woert hurled eight innings and allowed four runs (one earned) on seven hits.

UMass (8-13) scored a run in the top of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead when Adamski plated shortstop Lou Proiettoi with a groundout to the right side.

UConn (13-16) evened the score at run one apiece in the bottom of the third inning as sophomore Dale Brannon (St. Petersburg, Fla.) picked up his first of two RBIs on the afternoon.  Brantley drew a walk to open the inning and then stole second one batter later.  After moving to third on a balk charged to UMass starter Jared Freni, Brantley scored when Brannon singled up the middle.

The Huskies took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the sixth as senior catcher Larry Day (Amesbury, Mass.) delivered a two-run double to score seniors Matt Untiet (Berlin, Conn.) and Dennis Donovan (Center Moriches, N.Y.) to give UConn a 3-1 edge.

Third baseman Jim MacDonald helped the Minutemen chip away at the UConn lead as he picked up an RBI on a groundout to make the score 3-2 in favor of the Huskies.  Brannon regained UConn’s two-run lead in the bottom of the sixth when his single deflected off the pitcher’s glove and through the left side to score Turgeon.

Both Brannon and Day finished the afternoon with two hits and two RBIs, while Turgeon turned in a 2-for-4 showing at the plate.

UConn returns to action Wednesday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. when the Huskies welcome Rhode Island to J.O. Christian Field.
