STORRS, Conn. (April 11, 2007)
— University of Connecticut starting pitcher Brendan McGinn
(Tolland, Conn.) won his fifth consecutive decision as the Huskies
snapped a four-game losing streak with a 4-1 victory over Rhode
Island Wednesday afternoon at J.O. Christian Field.
McGinn (5-1) allowed one run on two hits while striking out three
batters in seven innings on the hill. After walking the first
batter of the game, McGinn settled in and retired the next 10
batters in order. In fact, McGinn didn’t allow a Rhode Island hit
until the fifth inning.
Senior Ted Garry (Rochester, Minn.) came on in relief and
pitched a scoreless eighth inning. Junior Matt Karl (Wallingford,
Conn.) pitched a perfect ninth inning, retiring all three hitters on
line drives to right field to earn his fourth save of the season.
Rhode Island relief pitcher James Norcott (2-4) was charged with the
loss after being touched for three runs on three hits in an inning
of work.
Rhode Island (8-19) struck for the game’s first run in the top of
the first inning. Third baseman Shaun Hagey drew a walk to open the
contest before moving to second on the following play on a groundout
to the right side by center fielder Dave Savard. After taking third
on a wild pitch, Hagey came in to score on catcher Zach Zaneski’s
groundout to short.
UConn (14-16) scratched across three runs in the bottom of the fifth
to take a 3-1 lead by piecing together four consecutive hits.
Sophomore right fielder Matt Burnett (Endicott, N.Y.) started
things with a one out single to left field. Fellow sophomore Erik
Turgeon (Palm Harbor, Fla.) followed with a single to shortstop,
before freshman center fielder Harold Brantley Jr. (Silver
Spring, Md.) laced a single into right field to load the bases.
Freshman Peter Fatse (Hampden, Mass.) gave the Huskies the
lead for good as he ripped a two-run double to right field to plate
Burnett and Turgeon. Sophomore second baseman Dale Brannon
(St. Petersburg, Fla.) produced the final run of the inning with a
sacrifice fly in the following at bat.
The Huskies added a fourth run in the bottom half of the sixth
inning by capitalizing on a Ram throwing error. Senior catcher
Larry Day (Amesbury, Mass.) scored the run as he raced home when
Turgeon’s grounder was thrown wildly by Hagey.
Fatse and junior Pat Mahoney (Des Moines, Iowa) led the
Huskies at the plate as the duo both finished with a 2-for-4
showing. Senior shortstop Dennis Donovan (Center Moriches,
N.Y.) finished the afternoon 1-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to
eight games.
