STORRS, Conn. (April
18, 2007)
— Sophomore Matt Burnett’s (Endicott, N.Y.) eighth inning RBI
double to left field proved to be the margin of victory as the
University of Connecticut baseball team defeated Brown, 6-5,
Wednesday afternoon at J.O. Christian Field.
Senior designated hitter Larry Day (Amesbury, Mass.) opened
the inning with a single to left field, before giving way to pinch
runner Ted O’Reilly (Arlington, Mass.). O’Reilly promptly
swiped second base before coming around to score as Burnett’s double
landed just inside the left field line.
Husky southpaw reliever Ted Garry (Rochester, Minn.) came in
and pitched a perfect ninth for his second save of the season to
preserve the win for the Huskies.
Freshman right-hander Robert Van Woert (Johnson City, N.Y.)
notched his fifth win of the season after allowing two runs (one
earned) on two hits in four innings of work. Senior southpaw
Brendan McGinn (Tolland, Conn.) hurled the first four innings
and gave up three runs (one earned) on seven hits.
Brown relief pitcher Paul Costa (1-2) suffered the loss after
surrendering the game-winning run in the eighth inning. He allowed
four hits in 1-1/3 innings of work.
UConn (17-18) scored a first inning run when senior shortstop
Dennis Donovan (Center Moriches, N.Y.) collected his 22 RBI of
the season. Freshman Pete Fatse (Hampden, Mass.) led off the
inning by lacing a double into right field before Donovan delivered
a two-out single to center field.
The Huskies tacked on a second run in the bottom half of the second
inning to up their lead to 2-0. Day drew a walk to lead off the
frame and moved to second base as junior third baseman Pat
Mahoney (Des Moines, Iowa) was retired on a groundout to the
right side. After Burnett singled through the left side to put
runners on the corners, junior catcher Brad Olt (Branford,
Conn.) plated Day with a sacrifice fly to left field.
Connecticut pushed across three more runs in the home half of the
third innings to up its edge to 5-0. Fatse walked to start the
inning before sophomore second baseman Dale Brannon (St.
Petersburg, Fla.) singled through the right side. After senior
first baseman Matt Untiet (Berlin, Conn.) singled to left
field to load the bases, Fatse scored his second run of the game on
a wild pitch charged to Ethan Silverstein. Donovan next collected
his team-leading 23rd RBI of the season on a sacrifice fly to score
Brannon, while Mahoney capped the inning with a double to
left-center to plate Untiet.
Brown (12-15) answered with three runs of its own in the top of the
fourth to cut the Husky lead right back to two runs. Designated
hitter Bryan Tews drove in one run with a double to left-center,
while third baseman Robert Papenhause and left fielder Ryan Murphy
drove in runs with groundouts on the infield.
The Bears continued to chip away at the UConn lead by scoring a
single run in the top of the fifth inning. Pinch hitter Dan Shapiro
drew a one out walk before stealing second base, and would later
come around to score on a wild pitch. Brown tied the game in the
top of the sixth inning on an RBI single by Murphy.
Burnett paced the Huskies at the plate with a 3-for-4 showing, while
Donovan led the way with two runs driven in.
UConn returns to action Friday evening at 6:30 p.m. as the Huskies
travel to Cincinnati to begin a three-game BIG EAST series with the
Bearcats.
