STORRS, Conn. (April 23, 2007) — University of Connecticut freshman center fielder Harold Brantley Jr. (Silver Spring, Md.) went 2-for-4 with a game-high three RBIs to help lead the Huskies to an 8-5 win over Siena Monday afternoon at J.O. Christian Field.

Brantley, who entered the game with four RBIs this season, set a new career-high with his trio of runs driven in and helped spot UConn starter Erik Turgeon (Palm Harbor, Fla.) an early six-run advantage.  Turgeon would go on to earn his first win of the season after allowing just one run on five hits while striking out two in five innings of work.

Siena starting pitcher Trevor Reid (0-2) suffered the loss after being touched for seven runs on five hits in 3-1/3 innings of work.

UConn (19-20) plated a trio of runs in the bottom of the second inning using a two-out rally to take an early lead.  Junior third baseman Pat Mahoney (Des Moines, Iowa) reached on a fielder’s choice to start the rally before stealing second base to put himself in scoring position.  After senior catcher Larry Day (Amesbury, Mass.) was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second, sophomore second baseman Dale Brannon (St. Petersburg, Fla.) crushed a two-run double onto the warning track in right-center field.  Brantley Jr. capped the inning by lacing a single back up the middle to plate Brannon.

Siena (4-26) struck for a run in the top of the fourth inning to cut the UConn lead to 3-1 when third baseman Moises Rivera connected for a solo home run over the left field trees.

The Huskies answered with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to extend their lead to 7-1.  Senior shortstop Dennis Donovan (Center Moriches, N.Y.) opened the inning with a single to left-center field before junior designated hitter Matt Karl (Wallingford, Conn.) followed with a single to center field.  After Mahoney was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Day connected for a sacrifice fly to center field to drive in Donovan from third.  Brannon next drew a walk to load the bases, while Brantley continued his stellar afternoon with a single up the middle to plate a pair with his third RBI of the game.  Freshman left fielder Pete Fatse (Hampden, Mass.) put the finishing touches on the scoring outburst with a sacrifice fly to right field to drive home Brannon.

Day notched his second RBI of the afternoon in the bottom of the fifth inning as he singled to left field to score senior first baseman Matt Untiet (Berlin, Conn.), who doubled down the right field line to start the inning.

Rivera produced Siena’s second run of the game in the top of the sixth inning as he delivered a two-out RBI single to left field.  In the top of the seventh inning, the Saints cut the Husky lead to 8-3 as second baseman Michael Ambury lined a home run over the right field fence.  Catcher Phil Cahill chipped in with an RBI single to account for the final run of the half inning.

The Saints scored a run in the top of the ninth inning to pull within three runs when shortstop Chris Klepps belted a home run to right-center field for Siena’s third round-tripper of the game.

UConn returns to the diamond Tuesday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. when the Huskies welcome in-state rival Fairfield to J.O. Christian Field.
