Baseball Falls to Michigan State 11-1

— The University of Connecticut baseball team fell to
Michigan State 11-1 on Sunday afternoon at Melching Field in DeLand, Fla.
UConn took the first lead in the
bottom of the third inning as sophomore Harold Brantley Jr.
(Silver Spring, Md.) forced a walk to reach base. Peter Fatse
(Hampden, Mass.) then recorded the Huskies' only score, as he
doubled home Brantley to put UConn on the board.
Michigan
State answer back immediately as Steve Gerstenberger hit a single to
score Kyle Day to tie the game at one in the fourth inning.

Michigan State's junior Day had three hits, including a
grand slam, while senior Chris Cullen threw five solid
innings. MSU scored six runs in the top of the fifth
inning and four more in the seventh to shut the door on
the Huskies.

UConn senior Matt Karl
(Wallingford, Conn.),
freshman Mike Olt (Branford, Conn.) and Erik Turgeon
(Palm Harbor, Fla.) each added a hit for the Huskies in the loss.
UConn freshman Elliot Glynn
(Los Alamitos, Calif.) pitched 5.0 innings in his first career
start for the Huskies while striking out three and allowing
just nine hits and seven runs. Freshman Dan Mahoney (Boston,
Mass.) came in out of the bullpen to pitch 2.0 innings for the
Huskies, while allowing four runs and three hits.
The Huskies, now 0-3 overall, will return to action
next weekend as the Huskies travel to Greensboro, N.C. to face UNC-Greensboro
in a three-game weekend series. The first game of the series is set
for Friday afternoon with a scheduled 4:00 p.m. first pitch.
