Box Score

GREENSBORO, N.C. (February 29, 2008) — The University of Connecticut baseball team fell to UNC-Greensboro 18-1 on Friday afternoon at the UNCG Baseball field in Greensboro, N.C.

A six run first inning for the Spartans was enough to pull away from the Huskies as the UConn program dropped to 0-4 on the season. UNCG, currently 3-1 overall this year, started the game with a three and out performance in the field.

A tough first inning for the Huskies' pitching staff, while UConn allowed for three walks, two wild pitches and one hit batter. Bob Van Woert (Johnson City, N.Y.) started on the mound for the Huskies, before Trent DeLazzer (Cypress, Calif.) came in out of the bullpen to finish out the inning.

The Spartans added four more runs in the bottom of the third inning as Sean Snell started the inning off with a double down the left field line and was quickly brought home by a triple by Corey Overholtzer. Another single scored Overholtzer while both Ray Quinones and Adam Deleo also scored on two hits by the Spartans.

Once again, UNCG continued to dominate with their bats, scoring three more runs in the fourth inning to build the lead to 13-0. In the seventh inning, the host Spartans added four more runs on three hits, including a triple by Deleo, who recorded six RBIs on the game.

The Huskies recorded their first run of the game in the top of the eighth inning as Pierre LePage (Wolcott, Conn.) pitch ran for sophomore Dale Brannon (St. Petersburg, Fla.) and scored to put the Huskies on the board.

UNCG answered back in the bottom of the inning with a solo homerun for their 18th run of the game to go ahead 18-1 before ending the game on the field. The Spartans ended the game with 17 hits against UConn's four. Deleo finished the game 4-for-5 with six RBIs and two runs scored while Tim Carrier added a 4-for-5 night with three RBIs.

Harold Brantley, Jr. (Silver Spring, Md.), Mike Olt (Branford, Conn.), Brad Olt (Branford, Conn.) and Peter Fatse (Hampden, Mass.) each tallied a hit for the Huskies. Van Woert drops to 0-2 on the season on the mound.

The Huskies, now will return to action on Saturday for their second of three games against the UNC-Greensboro Spartans. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
