Fatse Lifts UConn Baseball Over UPenn 18-0

— Peter Fatse (Hampden, Mass.) went 4-for-6 with seven runs
batted in to lead the University of Connecticut baseball team over
the University of
Pennsylvania 18-0 on
Monday afternoon in
Papa John's Palm Beach Challenge action at the
Santaluces Sports Complex.
UConn put up four runs in the top
of the first inning as Fatse hit a homerun to left field to put the
Huskies up 2-0. Senior co-captain Pat Mahoney (Des Moines,
Iowa) followed with a single to center field and then scored on
freshman Mike Olt's (Branford, Conn.) first career homerun.
After a scoreless second inning,
UConn added one more run in the third and three in the fourth to
extend their lead to eight early on. The fourth inning dominance was
led by Mahoney who recorded his first blast of the season as he
posted two RBIs on the hit.
The Huskies knocked in four more
runs in the fifth inning, to pull away from UPenn. UConn scored in
eight of the nine innings of the game, as the Huskies added one run
in the sixth, two in the seventh and eighth innings and one in the
ninth. Fatse added to his numbers on the day with a single in the
fifth to score three Huskies and add to the UConn tally.
The sixth inning consisted of a
freshman Mike Nemeth (Washington, N.J.) single followed by a
double down the right field line by sophomore Harold Brantley,
Jr. (Silver Spring, Md.) to score Nemeth for the Huskies.
In the ninth, the Huskies slammed
the door shut on UPenn as Doug Elliot
(Rocky Hill, Conn.) recorded his first career homerun and gave
the Huskies their 18th run of the game to pull UConn over UPenn
18-0.
Fatse finished the afternoon adding three runs
scored and four hits. Freshman Joe Pavone (Rochester, N.Y.)
chipped in two hits for the Huskies, while Elliot went 2-for-2 with
three RBIs. Pierre LePage (Wolcott, Conn.) went 2-for-4 with
three runs scored and one RBI for his ball club.
Freshman Elliot Glynn (Los Alamitos, Calif.) started on the
mound for the Huskies and gave up just two hits in 7.0 innings
pitched as he faced 24 batters. Will Musson (Wethersfield,
Conn.) came in to relieve Glynn as he pitched one inning and allowed
no hits. Senior Matt Karl (Wallingford, Conn.) pitched the
final inning for UConn as he allowed no hits and no runs.
UConn will face Penn State in
back-to-back games on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. and Wednesday at 7:00
p.m. to finish up play at the Papa John's Palm Beach Challenge.
