Baseball Falls to Georgetown 12-7 in BIG EAST Opener

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. (March 14, 2008) — A seven-run third inning by the Hoyas extended their lead to 11 as the University of Connecticut baseball team fell to Georgetown 12-7 in the Huskies' 2008 BIG EAST opener on Friday afternoon in Washington, D.C.

Sophomore Peter Fatse (Hampden, Mass.) led the way for UConn by hitting a grand slam in the top of the eighth inning to spark a rally for the Huskies. Fatse finished the day with one hit and four RBIs.

Georgetown opened up the game's scoring in the bottom of the second inning as Matt Harrigan led off the inning with a single to center field off Husky pitcher, Matt McDonald (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia). Kelly Muir followed with a double to the gap in right center to move Harrigan to third base before he scored on a wild pitch. After a Sean Baumann walk, Chip Malt doubled to right center to score two more runs for the Hoyas to extend their lead to 3-0. Before the inning ended, Malt found his way from second to score, as he advanced to third on a wild pitch and later scored on an infield groundout to second.

The Hoyas added seven runs in the third inning to run away from the Huskies as Sean Lamont hit a two-run homerun to begin the Georgetown run. Kelly Muir added to the inning with a triple to straight-away center and then scored on a UConn fielding error. Matthew Maranges also knocked one out of the park as he picked up three RBIs off UConn freshman Maxx Catapano (Fairfield, Conn.). Matt Iannetta added to the Hoya's dominating inning with a triple to left center to score Tommy Lee from first, after earning a walk to get on base.

UConn finally put a run of their own on the board as senior co-captain Pat Mahoney (Des Moines, Iowa) singled to left to start the Husky rally. Freshman Mike Olt (Branford, Conn.), who has had a great start to his first season playing collegiate ball, recorded his second homerun of the season to pull the Huskies to within nine. But the Hoyas put one more run in the book with a Lamont homer to left field in the bottom of the sixth.

The Huskies rallied back in the top of the eighth with four runs, led by an infield single from freshman Elliot Glynn (Los Alamitos, Calif.). Mahoney followed with a walk, while Olt loaded the bases after being hit by a pitch. Fatse entered the batter's box and sent a long ball deep over the right field fence as he recorded his third homerun of the season.

UConn again scored one run in the top of the ninth, in their last chance at the plate. Senior Gordon Stevens (Vista, Calif.) hit his first homerun of the season and fifth of his career to pull the Huskies to within five. But Georgetown's Vinent was able to close the door on the Husky rally and save the game for the Hoyas.

UConn's McDonald falls to 1-2 on the season with the loss as he saw 2.1 innings on the mound while allowing five runs and five hits. Catapano went 4.2 innings and gave up five hits and five walks.

Mahoney finished the afternoon with two hits and two runs scored for the Huskies.

Georgetown's Tim Adleman improves to 2-0 on the year as he went 6.0 innings and gave up just two hits while striking out five.

UConn will return to action on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. to face Georgetown in the second game of the BIG EAST three-game weekend series.
