Baseball Records First BIG EAST Victory with 2-0 Win over Georgetown

Connecticut vs Georgetown (Mar 15, 2008)

WASHINGTON, D.C. (March 14, 2008) — Freshman pitcher Dan Mahoney (Boston, Mass.) pitched eight innings while striking out seven as the University of Connecticut baseball team slipped past Georgetown 2-0 on Saturday afternoon at the Shirley Povich Field in Washington, D.C.

After nine scoreless innings and 21 strikeouts, UConn took a 1-0 lead as freshman Mike Nemeth (Washington, N.J.) led off the top of the tenth inning with a single to right field. Nemeth was thrown out at second on a fielder's choice by sophomore Dale Brannon (St. Petersburg, Fla.), who pitch hit for Brad Olt (Branford, Conn.). Brannon then advanced to second as senior Gordon Stevens (Vista, Calif.) singled to center. With two outs, freshman Elliot Glynn (Los Alamitos, Calif.) reached base on a fielding error by Georgetown's Dan Capeless as Brannon was able to score the go-ahead run from second.

The Huskies added another run to go up 2-0 as senior co-captain Pat Mahoney (Des Moines, Iowa) recorded his third hit of the game with a single to right field as he picked up his eighth RBI of the season.

UConn relief pitcher and co-captain David Erickson (Stratford, Conn.) hit one batter in the bottom of the tenth but easily got three quick outs to close out the game as the Huskies recorded their first BIG EAST victory of the 2008 season.

Dan Mahoney struck out seven and allowed just one hit in his eight innings pitched, while Erickson came into the game in the ninth inning and allowed one hit as well. Erickson clinched the victory for the Huskies and earned the win as part of the fierce pitching duo.

Georgetown's Michael Gaggioli went nine innings on the mound while striking out 13 Huskies and allowing six hits. Daniel Kennedy took the hill in the tenth for the Hoyas and gave up three hits and no earned runs.

Sean Lamont and Kelly Muir were the only two Hoyas to record a hit on the afternoon as UConn held the Hoyas scoreless while recording an errorless game.

Pat Mahoney's three hits and one RBI led UConn in the BIG EAST battle as the Huskies improve to 5-8 overall on the season and 1-1 in conference play. With the loss, Georgetown falls to 6-9 on the year and 1-1 in the BIG EAST.

UConn will finish the BIG EAST Conference series against Georgetown on Sunday afternoon with a 12:00 p.m. weekend finale.
