Baseball Downs Georgetown 9-7 in Extra Innings

Connecticut vs Georgetown (Mar 16, 2008)

WASHINGTON, D.C. (March 16, 2008) —  The University of Connecticut baseball team defeated Georgetown 9-7 in 11 innings on Sunday afternoon at the Shirley Povich Field to conclude the BIG EAST series against the Hoyas this weekend.

A late Husky rally in the top of the 11th inning gave UConn its second straight victory as a wild pitch by Georgetown's Alex Meyer scored Dennis Accomando (Monroe, Conn.) from third. Meyer had just come into the game to replace Daniel Kennedy on the mound for the Hoyas when the Huskies scored.

UConn started the game by going up 1-0 in the top of the first inning as sophomore Peter Fatse (Hampden, Mass.) earned a walk to lead off the inning. Senior co-captain Pat Mahoney (Des Moines, Iowa) continued his hot streak with the bat as he singled to right field then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Freshman Mike Olt (Branford, Conn.) followed as he earned the first RBI of the game with a groundout to second to score Fatse from third.

The Hoyas charged at the Huskies in the bottom of the inning with five runs, to go up 5-1. The inning's dominance was led by Georgetown's Dan Capeless, who recorded a double down the right field line to score two.

In the top of the fourth, UConn scored six runs as Olt led off the inning with a single to left field. Freshman Mike Nemeth (Washington, N.J.) then doubled down the right field line to advance Olt to third. Senior Matt Karl (Wallingford, Conn.) hit a shot to left to score Olt as freshman Joe Pavone (Rochester, N.Y.) followed with a single of his own to score Nemeth.

Pavone and Karl both advanced bases on a wild pitch as they were able to score on a hit by Gordon Stevens (Vista, Calif.) and then a Georgetown fielding error.

The Huskies went into the bottom of the fourth up 7-5 but the Hoyas were able to tie the game at seven as Capeless homered over the right field fence to score two.

After five scoreless innings, UConn's Nemeth singled to center before Karl reached base on a fielding error. Karl and Accomando, who came into the game to run for Nemeth, both advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Pavone. After a Hoya pitching change, Accomando scored the Huskies eighth run of the game to take the lead. The Huskies added another run as freshman Pierre LePage (Wolcott, Conn.) singled to right field to score Karl from third.

Nemeth finished the day going 3-for-6 with one run scored while Fatse finished with two hits and two RBIs.

UConn improves to 6-8 overall and 2-1 in the conference while Georgetown falls to 6-10 on the year and 1-2 in conference play.

The Huskies will return to action on Tuesday, March 18 as they return to Connecticut and travel to in-state rival Sacred Heart University. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m. at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard.
