WORCESTER, Mass.
(March 25, 2008)
— Freshman Elliot Glynn's (Los Alamitos, Calif.) grand
slam in the fourth inning helped lead the University of Connecticut baseball team
past Holy Cross 10-3 on Tuesday afternoon in non-conference action
at Fitton Field in Worcester, Mass.
The Huskies even their mark at 10-10
overall this season as Holy Cross falls to 4-12 on the year.
After a single, fielding error
and a walk to load the bases, Glynn hit his first career grand slam
to extend the UConn lead to 8-0 at the end of 3.5 innings.
UConn scored first in today's
win, putting up three runs in the second inning led by sophomore
Peter Fatse (Hampden, Mass.), who led off the inning with a
double and later scored on a Doug Elliot (Rocky Hill, Conn.)
single. Freshman Pierre LePage (Wolcott, Conn.) knocked in
two RBIs in the inning with his lone hit of the game.
Junior Matt Burnett
(Endicott, N.Y.) added the Huskies' fourth RBI of the game with a
single of his own in the fourth before Glynn's blast to extend the
Husky lead. In the bottom of the fourth the Crusaders put their
first run on the board with help from a walk and a wild pitch to get
Holy Cross into scoring position. Holy Cross' Ciardiello hit a
single to put a run on the board to make the score 8-1. The
Crusaders added one more run in the fifth and then one in the eighth
to earn a team total of three runs.
In the top of the ninth, the
Huskies shut the door on the Crusaders with back-to-back homeruns
from freshman Mike Olt (Branford, Conn.) and Fatse.
Sophomore right-handed pitcher
Dusty Odenbach (Rochester, N.Y.) earned the win, improving his
overall record to 2-1 on the year. He went 4.0 innings allowing four
hits, three walks and one earned run while striking out three. Holy
Cross' Holmes took the loss to fall 1-1 on the year as he gave up
three runs in the second inning.
Elliot finished the day with a
3-for-5 performance with two runs scored and two RBIs. Fatse went
2-for-4 with two runs while Glynn added one hit and four RBIs.
The Huskies
will return to action on Wednesday as they host in-state opponent
Yale at J.O. Christian Field at 3:00 p.m.
