STORRS, Conn.
(March 26, 2008)
— Freshman Elliot Glynn's (Los Alamitos, Calif.)
three-run homerun over the right field fence lifted the University of Connecticut baseball team
over Yale 4-3 on Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action at J.O.
Christian Field in Storrs, Conn.
Glynn
turned on the first pitch he saw in the fifth inning and sent it
over the right field wall to give the Huskies the first lead of the
game with a 3-0 advantage.
The Huskies improve to 11-10
overall this season as Yale drops its third straight game and falls to
6-14 on the year.
After Glynn's homerun in the fifth, the Bulldogs answered back with
three runs to tie the game. Yale put up one run in the top of the
sixth as Josh Cox scored from second on a single by Ryan Lavarnway.
Cox reached base with a single of his own and moved to second on a
stolen base.
In the top of the seventh, Yale scored two more runs to tie the game
as Will Musson (Wethersfield, Conn.) came into the game to
pitch for the Huskies, replacing UConn starter, Trent DeLazzer
(Cypress, Calf.). Musson struck out the first batter he faced
then allowed a double to Yale's Andy Megee, just his sixth hit
allowed this season. After hitting a Yale batter then getting the
inning's second out on a ground ball both runners were able to
advance then Yale put their second run on the board as Megee scored
on a passed ball. Cox then came up big once again for the Bulldogs,
this time knocking in the tying run on a single up the middle.
The Huskies battled back in the bottom of the inning and connected
for their fourth run of the game as Glynn, who reached base on a
fielder's choice, advanced and later scored as Yale pitcher Chris
Walsh tried to pick off Pat Mahoney (Des Moines, Iowa) at
first base but threw the ball away. Glynn's run turned into the game
winner as Musson picked up his first victory of the season.
DeLazzer went six innings on the mound, allowing four hits and one
run while walking three. Senior Matt Karl (Wallingford,
Conn.) came in to close out the game in the ninth as he gave up one
hit and one walk while striking out three to earn his third save of
the season.
LePage, Glynn and Karl each recorded two hits a piece in the win as
Glynn added two runs scored and three RBIs.
Yale's Walsh took the loss, dropping his record to 1-3 on the
season.
The Huskies
will host BIG EAST opponent Villanova this weekend in a three-game
conference series. The first of the BIG EAST match-ups will be on
Friday with the first pitch set for 3:00 p.m.
