Baseball Falls to Villanova 7-2

STORRS, Conn. (March 29, 2008) - The University of
Connecticut baseball team dropped the second game of its three game
weekend series with Villanova 7-2 Saturday. The Huskies fall to
12-11 overall and 4-4 in the BIG EAST Conference. The Wildcats are
8-14 and 1-4. Villanova was able to jump to a
6-0 lead after four innings. The big blow came in the top of the
third when catcher Wesley Borden hit a three-run home run off
starting pitcher Dan Mahoney (Boston, Mass.)
UConn got on the board in the bottom of the seventh when Pierre
LePage (Wolcott, Conn.) singled home Doug Elliot (Rocky
Hill, Conn.) to cut the deficit to 6-1. After the Wildcats scored in
the top of the eighth to make it 7-1, the Huskies scored one more in
the bottom of the inning when Mike Olt (Branford, Conn.)
singled home Pat Mahoney (Des Moines, Iowa).
With the score 7-2 in the bottom of the ninth, UConn was able to
load the bases with two outs on two Wildcat errors and a single by
Olt. From there Peter Fatse (Hampden, Mass.) had a good at
bat, fouling off a couple of pitches, but Villanova closer Josh
Eidell was able to strike him out to clinch the win.
For the game, Pat Mahoney, Olt and Fatse each hit 2-for-5. Brian
Streilein went eight innings for the win for Villanova, while Dan
Mahoney took the loss for the Huskies. UConn and
Villanova will conclude their weekend series on Sunday. Game time is
scheduled for 12:00 p.m. at J.O. Christian Field. |
