Turgeon Selected in 25th Round of MLB Draft by the New York Mets; Folino Taken in 49th by Yankees

STORRS, Conn. (June 9, 2008) – University of Connecticut junior Erik Turgeon (Palm Harbor, Fla.) was selected in the 25th round as the 764th overall pick by the New York Mets in the 2008 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Friday.

Turgeon, who has also signed with the Mets, was 1-0 for the Huskies this past season as a right-handed pitcher with a 6.67 ERA as the UConn ball club finished the season 27-28 overall and 11-16 in the BIG EAST. He was the winning pitcher in UConn’s 14-6 victory over Penn State back on March 11, 2008.

As a junior, Turgeon pitched in 28.1 innings while allowing 33 hits and 21 earned runs. He struck out 18 for the Huskies as well. One of his most solid performances this season was on March 8 as he went 1.2 innings in relief for the Huskies while striking out four and only allowing two hits along with no runs scored.

Junior John Folino (Quincy, Mass.) was chosen by the New York Yankees in the 49th round of the draft as he finished the 2008 season with an overall record of 4-4 in 13 appearances and seven starts. Folino posted an ERA of 5.02 while recording the most victories of any UConn pitcher this season. He threw 57.1 innings, allowing 72 hits and 32 earned runs, while striking out a team-high 39 batters.

In addition, two of UConn’s incoming 2008 freshmen were selected in the draft.

David Fischer (Ballston Lake, N.Y.), a 6-5 right-handed pitcher, was selected by the Los Angeles Angels in the 44th round while George Springer (Avon, Conn.), a 6-3 right-handed outfielder, was picked up by the Minnesota Twins in the 48th round of the draft.
