BLACKSBURG, VA (February 5, 2003)-- Junior guard Carlos Dixon poured in 21 points including 4-7 from three-point
range and senior center Terry Taylor gave the Huskies all they could handle down
low adding 19 points and nine rebounds as the University of Connecticut men's
basketball team was defeated by Virginia Tech 95-74 in front of 4,557 at the
Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg, Virginia.
With the loss, UConn drops to 13-5 on the season and 4-3 in conference play,
while Tech improves to 9-11 overall and 2-5 in the BIG EAST.
Connecticut got off to a good start, going up 4-0 with 18:20 remaining in the
first half. Virginia Tech would answer the challenge with an 8-0 run of
their own over the next four minutes and would catch fire over
the last 11:05 of the first half as they doubled-up the Huskies outscoring them
30-15 to head into the locker room with a 44-28 advantage.
UConn came out with a sense of urgency in the second half and shrunk the
Hokie lead to 11 at 51-40 with 16:00 left and looked poised to make a run.
The run would have to come without the leadership and direction of junior
point-guard Taliek Brown (Queens, NY) as he broke his left index finger falling
to the floor after being fouled early in the second half. The Hokies would
not let UConn get any closer than 11 as they were able to stifle any Husky
charge with a three point bucket at the most opportune time. Tech
was scintillating from deep connecting on nine of 19 attempts (47%) while UConn
struggled hitting only four of its 19 shots from three point land.
Freshman Rashad Anderson (Lakeland, FL) made all four of Connecticut's threes
and scored a career-high 22 points on the night. Sophomore Emeka Okafor
(Houston, TX) was solid adding 12 points, eight rebounds and six blocks.
Sophomore Ben Gordon (Mt. Vernon, NY) chipped in with 13. Freshman Marcus
White (Chicago, IL) came off the bench and posted career highs in points and
rebounds with seven and 11 respectively.
Eric Branham scored 10 points and Bryant Matthews 11 for Virginia Tech.
The Huskies remain on the road as they travel to Providence, RI to take on
the Friars of Providence College in the Dunkin-Donuts Center on Saturday,
February 8th. Tip-off is set for 4:00pm and the contest will be televised
nationally on ESPN. |
