Anderson Comes Off Husky Bench to
Pace UConn Over Mountaineers

MORGANTOWN, WEST VIRGINIA (January 25, 2005)-- Junior Rashad Anderson scored 22 points and grabbed seven rebounds off the Husky bench and helped the University of Connecticut to a 68-58 win over West Virginia University at West Virginia Coliseum Tuesday.

With the win, UConn improves to 12-4 on the season, 4-2 in the BIG EAST. West Virginia falls to 11-6, 1-5 in the league.

Anderson hit on six-of-nine from the field, including four-of-seven from three-point range. Sophomore Charlie Villanueva added 16 points in the contest and sophomore Marcus Williams had 12 points and five assists.

Junior Denham Brown and Anderson flipped spots in the Husky rotation, with Brown making his sixth start of the year and Anderson coming off the bench for the first time all season.

Anderson was at the heart of a Husky second half burst that got the lead to 42-30 with 11:12 to play and gave UConn some space down the stretch. WVU had cut the lead to 35-30, but the Huskies responded with a Denham Brown three and then a pair of Anderson buckets to expand the lead to 12. The Mountaineers again came back, cutting the lead to five, but Anderson hit a big three with just over seven minutes to go to again stem the tide.

For the third time in three BIG EAST road games, the Huskies got off to a good start. UConn jumped out to a 14-5 lead after just over eight minutes of play in the contest, holding the Mountaineers to just 2-of-12 shooting out of the gate. Sophomore Charlie Villanueva got off to a fast start, outscoring the on his own, tallying seven points in the first eight minutes. WVU senior Tyrone Sally kept the Mountaineers in the game in the early going, hitting on three three-pointers and helping his squad cut the deficit to 25-20 with 3:07 to play until halftime. UConn responded with a 6-2 burst to end the half, including the second of two three’s in the half by sophomore Marcus Williams, and went to the break with a 31-22 lead.

In the first half, UConn dominated on the boards, holding a 25-11 advantage on the glass and held the Mountaineers to 25.0% shooting from the field for the half. UConn shot 45.8%, but turned the ball over ten times, while WVU only coughed the ball up on four occasions.

UConn returns to action on Sunday, January 30 with a 3:45 p.m. contest at Notre Dame in South Bend, IN. That game will be televised live on CBS.
