PROVIDENCE, R.I. (March 6, 2006) – Sophomore Rudy Gay (Baltimore, Md.) headlines the list of six members of the University of Connecticut men’s basketball team that earned All-BIG EAST honors, as announced by the league office Monday. The BIG EAST Preseason Co-Player of the Year with Syracuse’s Gerry McNamara, Gay earned a spot on the All-BIG EAST First team by a vote of the league’s head coaches, who were not permitted to select their own players.

Gay, a 6-9 forward, averaged 15.4 points and 6.6 rebounds while helping UConn to a share of the BIG EAST regular season title and the top seed in this week’s BIG EAST Championship at Madison Square Garden. The 2004-05 BIG EAST Co-Rookie of the Year, he is one of four unanimous selections to this year’s all-conference First Team.

Also earning a place on the All-BIG EAST First Team are: senior forward Eric Hicks of Cincinnati, senior guard Chris Quinn of Notre Dame, junior center Aaron Gray of Pittsburgh, junior guard Quincy Douby of Rutgers, senior forward Mike Gansey of West Virginia and senior center Kevin Pittsnogle of West Virginia.

Hilton Armstrong (Peekskill, N.Y.) and Marcus Williams (Los Angeles, Calif.) each earned a spot of the All-BIG EAST Second Team, a first for both players. Armstrong has averaged 9.7 points, 6.6 rebounds and 3.5 blocks (No. 8 in the country) in his senior campaign, moving into the top five in school history with his per game and total block (100) numbers. Making an appearance on the All-BIG EAST Honorable Mention Team are Rashad Anderson (Lakeland, Fla.) and Josh Boone (Mt. Airy, Md.). One of the first players off the bench, Anderson is second on the team in scoring with 13.3. points and the all-time career leader in three-pointers made (263). The senior guard leads the nation in scoring among players without a start. A 2004-05 All-BIG EAST Second Team selection and member of the 2003-04 All-Rookie Team, Boone averages 10.7 points, 7.1 rebounds and 2.2 blocks while starting in 27 of 29 games at the power forward spot.

Jeff Adrien (Brookline, Mass.) takes home All-Rookie Team accolades after putting up 6.6 points and 5.3 rebounds in an average of 16.6 minutes off the bench. The freshman forward is shooting 60.7 percent from the field and has reached double figures in scoring six times this season heading into the BIG EAST Tourney.

With the increased membership of the BIG EAST to 16 teams, the all-league teams have been expanded.  Eleven players made the All-BIG EAST First Team.  On March 7, one of those players will be named BIG EAST Player of the Year when the league announces its individual award winners at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in New York City at 5 p.m. EST.

The BIG EAST All-Rookie Team also has 11 members, one of which will be named BIG EAST Rookie of the Year.  Three members were unanimous picks – guard Devan Downey of Cincinnati, forward Wilson Chandler of DePaul and guard Dominic James of Marquette.
