Six Huskies Named To All-BIG EAST
Teams
PROVIDENCE, R.I.
(March 6, 2006) –
Sophomore Rudy Gay (Baltimore, Md.) headlines the list of six
members of the University of Connecticut men’s basketball team that
earned All-BIG EAST honors, as announced by the league office Monday.
The BIG EAST Preseason Co-Player of the Year with Syracuse’s Gerry
McNamara, Gay earned a spot on the All-BIG EAST First team by a vote
of the league’s head coaches, who were not permitted to select their
own players.
Gay, a 6-9 forward,
averaged 15.4 points and 6.6 rebounds while helping UConn to a share of the BIG
EAST regular season title and the top seed in this week’s BIG EAST Championship
at Madison Square Garden. The 2004-05 BIG EAST Co-Rookie of the Year, he is one
of four unanimous selections to this year’s all-conference First Team.
Also earning a place on
the All-BIG EAST First Team are: senior forward Eric Hicks of Cincinnati, senior
guard Chris Quinn of Notre Dame, junior center Aaron Gray of Pittsburgh, junior
guard Quincy Douby of Rutgers, senior forward Mike Gansey of West Virginia and
senior center Kevin Pittsnogle of West Virginia.
Hilton Armstrong
(Peekskill, N.Y.) and
Marcus Williams (Los Angeles, Calif.) each earned a spot of the All-BIG
EAST Second Team, a first for both players. Armstrong has averaged 9.7 points,
6.6 rebounds and 3.5 blocks (No. 8 in the country) in his senior campaign,
moving into the top five in school history with his per game and total block
(100) numbers. A 2004-05 member of the All-BIG EAST Third Team, Williams puts up
an average of 10.4 points and 8.4 assists per game, while coming up with the
sixth triple-double in UConn history against Notre Dame on February 21.
Making an appearance on
the All-BIG EAST Honorable Mention Team are Rashad Anderson (Lakeland, Fla.) and
Josh Boone (Mt. Airy, Md.). One of the first players off the bench, Anderson
is second on the team in scoring with 13.3. points and the all-time career
leader in three-pointers made (263). The senior guard leads the nation in
scoring among players without a start. A 2004-05 All-BIG EAST Second Team
selection and member of the 2003-04 All-Rookie Team, Boone averages 10.7 points,
7.1 rebounds and 2.2 blocks while starting in 27 of 29 games at the power
forward spot.
Jeff Adrien
(Brookline, Mass.) takes home All-Rookie Team accolades after putting up 6.6
points and 5.3 rebounds in an average of 16.6 minutes off the bench. The
freshman forward is shooting 60.7 percent from the field and has reached double
figures in scoring six times this season heading into the BIG EAST Tourney.
With the increased
membership of the BIG EAST to 16 teams, the all-league teams have been
expanded. Eleven players made the All-BIG EAST First Team. On March 7, one of
those players will be named BIG EAST Player of the Year when the league
announces its individual award winners at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in New York City
at 5 p.m. EST.
The BIG EAST All-Rookie
Team also has 11 members, one of which will be named BIG EAST Rookie of the
Year. Three members were unanimous picks – guard Devan Downey of Cincinnati,
forward Wilson Chandler of DePaul and guard Dominic James of Marquette.
The Huskies open BIG EAST Tournament play Thursday at noon
as they take on the winner of No. 8 Cincinnati vs. No. 9 Syracuse in a
quarterfinal matchup. The game will be televised on ESPN/ESPN2.
