Three Huskies Named To All-BIG EAST
Teams
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (March 10, 2008) - University of Connecticut men's
basketball players Jeff Adrien (Brookline, Mass.) and A.J. Price
(Amityville, N.Y.) each earned a spot on the All-BIG EAST First Team, while
Hasheem Thabeet (Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania) received Second Team honors as the
conference office announced all-league performers Monday.
All-BIG EAST selections are voted on by the league's head coaches, who are not
permitted to vote for their own players. UConn and Notre Dame were the only
schools to be represented by two players on the First Team.
Joining Adrien and Price, a unanimous selection, on the First Team are: Deonta
Vaughn (Cincinnati), Roby Hibbert (Georgetown), David Padgett (Louisville), Luke
Harangody (Notre Dame), Kyle McAlarney (Notre Dame), Sam Young (Pittsburgh),
Brian Laing (Seton Hall), Kentrell Gransberry (USF) and Joe Alexander (West
Virginia).
Adrien leads all active BIG EAST players in career double-doubles with 32,
including 16 this season. He is averaging 14.8 points and 9.1 rebounds after
starting all 31 games in the regular season.
Price averaged 14.7 points on the season and 16.1 in BIG EAST play after leading
the squad in scoring a team-high 12 times with nine 20-plus point performances.
His 6.0 assist mark placed him second in the league.
Thabeet established a new BIG EAST single-season record for blocks Sunday night
against Providence, tallying his 94th of the year. He bypassed Georgetown's
Alonzo Mourning, who tallied 93 during the 1991-92 season. Thabeet averages 4.5
blocks per game, while also putting up 10.5 points and 8.0 rebounds.
When the BIG EAST membership grew to 16 teams in 2005-06, the all-league teams
were expanded. Eleven players are named to the All-BIG EAST First Team with one
of those players earning BIG EAST Player of the Year honors. The conference will
announce the Player of the Year and its other individual awards at the Grand
Hyatt Hotel in New York City, March 11, at 6 p.m. EST.
The fourth-seeded Huskies open BIG EAST Tournament play Thursday at 2 p.m. as
they take on the winner of No. 5 West Virginia vs. No. 12 Providence in a
quarterfinal matchup. The game will be televised on ESPN.
