STORRS,
Conn. (September 4, 2008)-- The University of Connecticut announced its
2008-09 men’s basketball schedule Wednesday, a demanding slate that features 12
nationally-televised regular season contests and a grueling 18-game BIG EAST
Conference schedule.
Local television broadcast plans for the remainder of the schedule will be
announced at a later date.
The BIG EAST Conference features an 18-game regular season schedule for the
second consecutive season. Each league school plays every school once and three
opponents twice, one home and one away. The Huskies play Notre Dame, Pittsburgh
and Seton Hall twice.
The home schedule features eight contests at the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion on
the UConn campus in Storrs. That includes the exhibition opener on Wednesday,
November 5 against American International College. Highlighting the Gampel
Pavilion schedule will be nationally televised contests against Michigan (2/7,
ESPN), Syracuse (2/11, ESPN) and Notre Dame (2/28, CBS). It will be the second
ever meeting between UConn and Michigan in the sport of men’s basketball, the
last coming in the 1939-40 season.
The Huskies will play 10 contests at the XL Center, including one exhibition
contest against UMass-Lowell on Sunday, November 9. Headlining the XL Center
schedule will be nationally televised games against Georgetown (12/29, ESPN) and
Pittsburgh (2/16, ESPN). The Huskies will also host Stony Brook University on
December 15, the return of former UConn captain and assistant coach Steve
Pikiell, entering his fourth season as head coach of the Bobcats.
The Husky non-conference road slate will include a trip to Seattle for a
neutral site contest with Gonzaga University to be televised nationally on CBS
on December 20. UConn will also compete in the 2008 US Virgin Islands Paradise
Jam. The Huskies will take on LaSalle in the opening contest on Friday, November
21. The field also includes Wisconsin, Miami (Fla.), Southern Mississippi, Iona,
Valparaiso and San Diego in the event to be held at the University of the Virgin
Islands Sports and Fitness Center in Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas. |
