Men's and Women's Cross Country Compete At The New England Championships

BOSTON, Mass. (October 11, 2008) – The
University of Connecticut men’s and women’s cross country teams competed in the
New England Championships on Saturday, Oct. 11 in Boston, Mass.
Among the men, there was a total of 47 different teams with
316 runners total from colleges or universities all over the New England area.
The UConn men’s team brought six runners to the competition, five of which were
freshman and the lone upperclassman, a sophomore.
Overall, the team finished in 30th place with
sophomore Scott Johnson (Old Lyme, Conn.) finishing the race first for the
Huskies in 41st place in a time of 25:31. Following behind him in
for second place on the team and 56th overall was freshman Andrew
Judd (West Hartford, Conn.) just 12 seconds later at 25:43.
Coming in third and fourth place on the team were Luke
Albertson (Norwich, Conn.) (27:01) and Rachid Sofiane (Wallingford, Conn.)
(27:39) respectively. Finishing out the race for the Huskies were twins Tim and
Alex Bennatan who finished in 251st place together with a time of
28:15.
The
men's course was
the same as the women's 5k course with another lap added around "The Wilderness"
area to extend their distance to 8k.

The women’s team fared slightly better than the men’s
finishing as a team in 25th place out of 45 teams. There was a total
of 301 runners in the women’s tournament from the 45 colleges spread throughout
the New England Area.
Senior Kaitlin Vaughan finished first overall for the
Huskies and 95th overall among the women with a time of 19:25.
Junior Sarah Leslie came in right behind her in 119th
place just 16 seconds later for second best among the Huskies. Sophomore Caitlin
Cannon and freshman Heather Wilson placed together in 147th place
overall and third on the team with a time of 20:02.
Finally sophomore Leah Andrianos and Keelan King placed for
the Huskies rounding out their pack with times of 20:11 and 20:36 respectively.
The
women’s course took them around the Franklin Park Zoo and through "The
Wilderness" before finishing up almost where it began.
