UConn to Face Wake Forest in Meineke Car Care Bowl

STORRS, CONN. (Dec. 2, 2007) - Meineke Car Care Bowl officials announced on Sunday evening that Wake Forest has accepted a bid to their bowl game and will oppose UConn on Dec. 29 at 1:00 p.m. at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte. For ticket and travel information, go to UConnBowl.com.

The Huskies and Demon Deacons recently split a home-and-home series as UConn took a 51-17 decision in Winston-Salem, N.C. in 2003 while Wake Forest topped UConn, 24-13, last Sept. 16 at Rentschler Field.

Wake Forest posted an 8-4 record on the year and a 5-3 mark in ACC play. UConn (9-3, 5-2 BIG EAST) has two common opponents with the Demon Deacons. Both teams beat Duke in Durham and, in an eerie coincidence, both teams lost at Virginia by an identical 17-16 score. The Deacons won the ACC Championship last year but lost to BIG EAST Champion Louisville in the FedEx Orange Bowl. This appearance in the Meineke Car Care Bowl marks the first time that Wake Forest has ever earned a bowl berth in consecutive seasons.

“We’re very honored and feel very privileged to be playing against Wake Forest in the Meineke Car Care Bowl on Dec. 29," UConn head coach Randy Edsall said on a media teleconference Sunday evening. "We know them from a year ago when they came up here to Rentschler Field and beat us. They’re a quality team. They’re well coached. Jim Grobe and his staff do an excellent job. They had another very good year this year and we know that we’ve got to go down and play them in their back yard so it will be a tough environment and a tough game, but we’re looking forward to playing a class outfit and a very good football team in Wake Forest.

“I haven’t really had a chance to study any kind of tape on them yet. I know they played a very tough Nebraska team, I saw that early in the year on TV and I saw what they did to Florida State too. They did have a lot of fifth year seniors last year but they turned around and came back and had a very productive year this year. Jim (Grobe) has got a quality program down there. He’s done a good job. He’s been able to redshirt a lot of guys and they have been able to keep them in the system. I just know this, they are well coached. They do a good job and every time you watch them play you know you’re going to be in for a dogfight when you play a Jim Grobe team.”
