Davis, Lansanah to Sign NFL Free Agent Contracts
STORRS, Conn. (April
28, 2008) -- Two former University of Connecticut football
players, defensive tackle Dan Davis and linebacker Danny Lansanah, have agreed to terms on rookie free agent
contracts with National Football League franchises. The deals will
become official as the two report to their respective teams’
rookie mini camps.
Davis intends to sign with the Indianapolis Colts and Lansanah with
the Green Bay Packers. The
pair will be joined in upcoming NFL camps by their teammates Tyvon
Branch and Donald Thomas who were selected in the NFL Draft on
Sunday by the Oakland Raiders (4th round) and Miami Dolphins (6th
round) respectively.
Both players served as team captains in 2007,
helping the Huskies to their first-ever BIG EAST Championship and a
berth in the Meineke Car Care Bowl. Each also played in the 2004
Motor City Bowl, making them two of the six Huskies to play in both
of the school's bowl game appearances.
A
native of Plainfield, N.J., Davis started 35 of his 42 games played
at UConn, spending his senior season at defensive tackle and the
first three as a defensive end. Davis made 116 total tackles as a
Husky, including 21 for loss, 7.5 of which were sacks. He did not
miss a start in either of his final two seasons and was named the
team's co-MVP following the 2007 regular season.
Lansanah,
a native of Harrisburg, Pa., is the ninth-leading tackler in UConn
history with 323 and his 35 career TFLs tie for sixth-best amongst
Huskies all-time. His 10 interceptions tie for eighth in school
history and he is one of four UConn players to ever return two
interceptions for a touchdown in their careers at the school. He was
named first-team All-BIG EAST in 2007, and UConn's Defensive MVP,
leading the team with 121 stops on the season. Lansanah also led
UConn in tackles in 2006 with his 99.
"I am very happy that they will have the
opportunity to try to win a job in the NFL," UConn head coach Randy
Edsall said. "They made significant contributions to our program
here at UConn. I am proud of them and thankful for what they have
done here and I wish them both the best of luck with these
opportunities."
