STORRS, CT (September 6) – With help from its frontline, the
University of Connecticut men’s soccer team shutout American University, 3-0, in
the first day of action at the 2002 adidas/UConn Soccer Classic at Morrone
Stadium on Friday night. The Huskies improved their record to 1-1 on the early
season, while the Eagles dropped to 2-1.
UConn got an early jump at the 7:32 mark of the game. Damani
Ralph (Kingston, Jamaican) took the ball up the left side of field, taking a
shot almost parallel to the endline. The ball crossed in front of the goal and
rolled in on the opposite side for the score. Putting the Huskies up 2-0, Cesar
Cuellar (Santa Cruz, Bolivia) received a forward pass from midfielder Anthony
Curtis (Kingston, Jamaica), who in turned nailed the ball into the opposite side
of the goal. UConn held the 12-4 advantage in shots at halftime.
American came out strong in the second half, out shooting the
Huskies 6-4, dominating a lot of the play. But in the end Connecticut notched
the final goal of the game. Rui Fernandes (Bridgeport, CT) stole the ball from
an American defender at the 84:48 mark and beat AU goalie Micahel Behonick to
seal the victory.
UConn out shot American, 16-10, but the Eagles held the 4-3
advantage in corner kicks. Rookie keeper Adam Schuerman (Brookfield, WI) earned
his first collegiate as a Husky win in net stopping five saves. AU’s Behonick
had a strong outing in net making six saves, keeping the score respectable.
In earlier action, Boston College’s Neil Krause scored the
game-winning goal in double overtime (115:31) to seal the Eagles’ victory over
UNLV, 3-2.
UConn will face the Running Rebels of UNLV on Sunday, September 8 at 2:00 pm
in second day action of the 2002 adidas/UConn Soccer Classic. Preceding
Connecticut’s game is the Boston College/American match-up at 11:30 am.
