Huskies Blank UNLV, 5-0, Claiming the 2002 adidas/UConn Soccer Classic Title

Boxscore

STORRS, CT (September 8) – Scoring three of its five goals on penalty kicks and shutting out the opponent for the second straight game, the University of Connecticut men’s soccer team took revenge on UNLV with a 5-0 defeat in the final game of the 2002 adidas/UConn Soccer Classic at Morrone Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Before a crowd of 2,532, the No. 16 nationally-ranked Huskies improved their record to 2-1 and claimed the tournament title. UNLV moved to an even 2-2, and winless on the weekend.

The first of three penalty kicks came at the 7:14 mark of the game when a UConn shot bounced off the hand of UNLV’s Espen Sjoevoll just inside the right side of the goal box. Connecticut’s Cesar Cuellar (Santa Cruz, Bolivia) shot the ball to the left of keeper Ben Stollerman for the score.

Six-minutes into the second half, Cuellar was taken down by Stollerman in the front of the goal box. Cuellar was awarded a penalty kick that he shot into the bottom right of the goal. The final penalty kick was granted after another UNLV handball in the goal box. Rui Fernandes (Bridgeport, CT) took the shot at the 68:43 mark of the second half, raising the score to 3-0. Michael Mordocco (Dix Hills, NY) claimed his first goal of the year just under four-minutes later (74:36). Drew Brown (Middletown, CT) and Fernando Morales (Miami, FL) played a give-and-go up to Mordocco, who blanked the ball past Stollerman from close range. Morales sealed the day’s scoring with 9:34 left in regulation taking the ball up field for the goal.

UConn keeper Adam Schuerman (Brookfield, WI) netted his second collegiate shutout and win in as many games, making three saves on the day. Stollerman, stopping five shots on goal, earned the start after UNLV’s Justin Dennis was ejected from Friday night’s game for receiving a red card when he took a BC player down outside the goal box. The Huskies out shot the Rebels, 18-7, and held the 8-1 advantage in corner kicks.

In earlier action, American defeated Boston College, 1-0 in double overtime. Andrew Herman scored the game-winning goal at the 108:26 mark of the match. The tournament’s Offensive MVP was awarded to UConn’s Damani Ralph (Kingston, Jamaica) and the Defensive MVP went to Schuerman. The 2002 adidas/UConn Soccer Classic All-Tournament team is as followed: Schuerman (UConn), Ralph (UC), Fernandes (UC), Casey Schmidt (BC), Bill Arnault (BC), Lindon Pecorelli (UC), Anthony Curtis (UC), David Pryor (AU), Reggie Bolden (UNLV) Will Thornton (UC) and Andrew Herman (AU).
