Huskies Suffer Second Loss of the Season to BU

Boxscore

STORRS, CT (September 17) – The No. 7 nationally ranked University of Connecticut men’s soccer team fell 1-0 to Boston University at Nickerson Field in Boston, MA on Tuesday evening. The game broke UConn’s three game shutout run, and dropped its record to 3-2-0 overall, while Boston University improved to 4-1-1 on the season.

After a scoreless first half, Boston University put a score on the board with just over twenty-three minutes remaining in regulation. Federico Bianchi trapped the ball about four-yards out off a long throw-in from David Fahey. Bianchi’s first shot was blocked but he fired a second from point-blank range as it slithered under UConn keeper Adam Schuerman (Brookfield, WI) on the near post. The goal broke Schuerman’s shutout streak, as the Huskies had out shot their opponents, 8-0, in the three previous contests.

The Huskies had a number of scoring chances in the second half, including a possession in the 55th minute of play in which Terrier goalkeeper Matt Smith made back-to-back saves on shots by Cesar Cuellar (Santa Cruz, Bolivia) and Andres Rota (Kingswood, TX).

Despite the loss, the Huskies out shot Boston University, 17-11, and held the lopsided, 7-3, advantage in corner kicks. Schuerman was forced to make only one save in net, while Smith stopped nine shots on goal.

The last time UConn and Bu met at Nickerson Field was on October 2, 1991, a 1-0 loss for the Huskies. Last season, Connecticut defeated Boston University, 1-0, on September 6 at Morrone Stadium.

Tonight’s game began a five-game road trip for the Huskies. UConn will travel to BIG EAST rival Pittsburgh on Saturday, September 21 for a 1:00 pm start at Founders Field.
