Huskies Claim Win Over Pittsburgh, 4-1

STORRS, CT (September 21) – Cesar Cuellar (Santa Cruz,
Bolivia) notched two goals and added an assist to help lead the University of
Connecticut men’s soccer team to a 4-1 victory of the University of Pittsburgh
on Saturday afternoon at Founders Field in Pittsburgh, PA. With the win, the
Huskies improve to 4-2-0 overall, 2-1 in the BIG EAST, while Pittsburgh dropped
to 5-2-0 overall, and suffered its first league loss of the season (1-1-0).
Damani Ralph (Kingston, Jamaica) opened the scoring just
three minutes into the game off passes from Cuellar and Lindon Pecorelli (La
Crescenta, CA). Pittsburgh evened the score on a goal by Nate Montgomery in the
15 th
minute of play. Just over three-minutes later, Leandro de Oliveira (Sao Paulo,
Brazil) notched his first collegiate goal as a Husky off a Ralph and Rui
Fernandes (Bridgeport, CT) assist, to put UConn ahead for the remainder of the
game.
Cuellar was awarded a penalty kick three minutes into the
second half to seal the UConn BIG EAST victory.
Freshman keeper Adam Schuerman (Brookfield, WI) recorded a
career-high eight saves for UConn. Pittsburgh goalie Justin Gaul made six saves in net.
Connecticut will travel to Seattle, WA to take part in the
Husky Classic hosted by the University of Washington. UConn will face Portland
on Friday, September 27 at 7:30 pm (est) and Washington on Sunday, September 28
at 5:00 pm (est). |
