No. 10 Huskies Fall 1-0 to No. 3 St. John's
Boxscore
JAMAICA, NY (October 25) – A St. John’s penalty kick would
stand as the lone goal of the game, as the No. 3 Red Storm defeated the
University of Connecticut men’s soccer team, 1-0, at the Daly Worldwide
Communications Classic at Belsen Stadium in Jamaica, NY on Friday night. The
game, which started an hour and a half late, due to overtime St. John’s women’s
contest and the first game of the Classic (LIU and Adelphi) was played before a
crowd of 2,266 in the pouring rain.
No. 10 UConn dropped to 10-4-0 overall, 5-3-0 in the BIG
EAST, and has allowed all four of its losses on the road. The Red Storm improved
to 11-1-3 overall, 7-1-1 in the league.
The majority of the half was played at midfield as the ball
switched possessions between UConn and St. John’s. Connecticut best opportunity
of the half came just under the 40-minute mark. Mike Mordocco (Dix Hills, NY)
fed a clean centering forward pass to Damani Ralph’s (Kingston, Jamaica). The
stingy St. John’s defense, which held Connecticut to only three shots in the
half, foiled Ralph’s attempt to get the shot off at the top of the box. St.
John’s Chris Corcoran took a header in the 26th minute that sailed
over the net, one of four St. John’s shots of the half.
St. John’s held possession for the first five-minutes of
play taking off a shot and placing a corner kick into the box. Minutes later,
UConn keeper Adam Schuerman (Brookfield, WI) was out of the net to make a save,
and St. John’s Andre Schmid recovered the ball taking a shot that hit off the
right hand of Husky Lindon Pecorelli (La Crescenta, CA), who was in the goal
crease covering for Schuerman at the 6:58 mark of the half. St. John’s Rich
Bradley took the penalty shot that was kicked to the right side of the net, as
Schuerman dove to the opposite side. Moments later, UConn converged up the
field allowing Ralph to get off two consecutive shots, the first off the post,
and the second a rebounded shot, blocked by the Red Storm defense. With
22-minutes left in regulation, Ralph was one-on-one with SJU’s goalie Bill
Gaudette, who was out of the goal mouth. Ralph lobbed the ball over him, which
went to the right of the open net.
Ralph had seven of UConn’s nine shots in the loss.
Schuerman recorded four saves, while Gaudette had one stop.
UConn will play Adelphi on Saturday at 6:00 pm at Belsen
Stadium as part of the Worldwide Communications Classic. |
