UConn Blanks Adelphi

JAMAICA, NY (October 26) –Damani Ralph’s (Kingston, Jamaica) two goals help to lift the No. 10 University of Connecticut men’s soccer team past Adelphi University, 4-0, at the St. John’s Daly Worldwide Communications Classic at Belson Stadium in Jamaica, NY on Saturday evening. UConn, taking its seventh shutout of the season, improved to 11-4-0 overall, while Adelphi fell to 4-9-1.

Last evening, UConn fell to St. John’s, 1-0, on a Red Storm penalty kick in the first day action of the classic.  Long Island University and Adelphi tied in a 1-1 double-overtime game.

UConn got on the board at the 21:20 mark of the first half on Ralph’s team-leading 12th goal of the season.  Anthony Curtis (Kingston, Jamaica) sent a pass to the outside left of the field to Ralph.  He then controlled the ball and crossed the shot to the opposite side for the score.  Joe Coyle (Belle Meade, NJ) also assisted on the goal.  Adelphi’s best opportunity of the half was in the 37th minute when Sigurd Riksfjord’s initial shot was punched out by UConn keeper Adam Schuerman (Brookfield, WI), he then took another shot which was hit out of the crease by Husky defenseman Marcus Svensson (Kivek, Sweden).

UConn opened the scoring gap 11:06 into the second half.  Stephen Arias (Bakersfield, CA) sent in a centering pass to the middle of the offensive box. Michael Mordocco (Dix Hills, NY) took a few steps and shot the ball into the upper half of the net to put the Huskies up, 2-0. Curtis sent a long pass up the left sideline to Leandro de Oliveira (Sao Paulo, Brazil), who played the ball deep into the left side of the offensive box.  De Oliveira sent the pass into the center of the box to Ralph’s feet, settled it and shot it into the lower right side of the net at the 67:29 mark of the game. Ian Quattrocchi (St. Louis, MO) notched UConn’s fourth goal of the night with 15-minutes remaining in regulation on assists from Mordocco and Andres Rota (Kingswood, TX).

Schuerman stopped two Adelphi shots on goal, while Igor Yatsenko and Stephen Elliot each played a half recording two saves.  UConn out shot Adelphi, 19-4.

UConn will play host to Virginia Tech on Wednesday, October 30 at 7 pm at Morrone Stadium.
