STORRS, CT (November 29) – The University of Connecticut
men’s soccer team will play host to Indiana University in the third round of the
NCAA Men’s College Cup on Sunday, December 1 at 1:00 pm at Morrone Stadium.
The Huskies
shutout Penn on Wednesday afternoon in second round action on goals from Damani
Ralph, Shavar Thomas, Cesar Cuellar and Michael Mordocco to advance to the
‘Sweet 16’ round of the tournament. UConn is ranked No. 8 nationally and is the
No. 7 seed in the 2002 tournament making its sixth straight and 23
overall appearance. The Huskies hold a 16-5 overall record and are led by 2002
BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year and M.A.C. Hermann Trophy finalists Damani
Ralph, who has notched 18 goals and five assists for 41 points.
The Hoosiers are looking towards its sixth straight NCAA
Final Four appearance in this year’s College Cup action. Indiana enters Sunday’s
game with a 15-3-2 overall record and ranked No. 5 in the country. Indiana
defeated BIG EAST nemesis Notre Dame 1-0 on Wednesday to advance to the third
round. Pat Noonan who has scored 14 goals and nine assists for 37 points leads
the Hoosiers.
Indiana leads the three games series over UConn, 2-1, dating back to the 1978
season. The first meeting, the Hoosiers claimed the 4-2 win in Storrs, but UConn
claimed its first win in during the 1981-championship year, a 3-1 home victory.
The other meeting came in 1981, a 1-0 Indiana shutout. Sunday’s game will be the
first meeting in 21 years between UConn and Indiana, but not the first for IU
head coach Jerry Yeagley, who has been at the helm of Indiana soccer for 29
years.

The first three rounds of the NCAA tournament are played on campus sites with
the Semifinals and Finals being hosted by Southern Methodist University at
Gerald J. Ford Stadium in Dallas, TX on December 13th and 15th.
