UConn Falls 3-0 to Maryland in NCAA 'Elite Eight'

Boxscore

COLLEGE PARK, MD (Dec. 7) – No. 2 Maryland scored three second-half goals to defeat No. 7 Connecticut men's soccer team, 3-0, in the NCAA Tournament's 'Elite Eight' round before a crowd of 3,460 fans.  The Huskies completed their season at 17-6 while Maryland continues with a 20-4 record and will compete in the 2002 Men’s College Cup in Dallas next weekend.

The first half went scoreless as the two teams battled for possession in the midfield.  At one point in the half UConn led 7-2 in shots, but at the end of 45-minutes each team had nine shots apiece. One of UConn’s best chances came in the 26th minute when Leandro de Oliveira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) took a 35-yard shot that hit the opposite left post.

Play switched hands as Maryland took command of the game in the second half.  Maryland got on the board at the 59:13 mark on a shot from Domenic Mediate.  Seth Stammler sent a long ball from the midfield to the feet of Mediate.  He beat the defenders and lined the ball to the opposite left corner, just shy of the hands of UConn keeper Adam Schuerman (Brookfield, WI).  Maryland’s second goal was tabbed an own goal after UConn’s Marcus Svensson (Kivek, Sweden) tried to clear the ball out but it deflected back over the head of Schuerman who had come off  his line to help with the save at the 81:54 mark.  Mediate notched Maryland’s last goal with 1:29 left in regulation.  He beat two defenders and pushed the ball past Schuerman.

Schuerman had a strong outing in net stopping seven shots on goal while Palmer also made seven saves.  Maryland edged UConn in shots, 17-15.
