STORRS, Conn. (Sept. 10) - The University of Connecticut men's soccer
team (1-2-0) snapped a two-game shutout steak by scoring four goals in
the first half on their way to a 4-0 win against Richmond (1-2-0) in
the second game of the UConn adidas Soccer Classic Friday night at
Morrone Stadium. Sophomore Sean Cameron (North Bruinswick, N.J.)
started the scoring and freshman Bonginkosi Macala (Pretoria, South
Africa) followed with a pure hat trick to give UConn its first win of
2004.
Scoring for the Huskies began just 2:47 into the contest, as Cameron
took advantage of a fallen Spider goalkeeper Eric Sciocchetti and
found the back of the net to snap a 182:47 shutout streak for UConn
this season. Cameron was assisted by freshmen Chukwudi Chijindu
(Fontana, Calif.) and Macala.
At 18:50 of the first, Macala headed the ball over Sciocchetti on a
feed from the left side of the net by junior Willis Forko (Houston,
Texas) to collect the first goal of his career. Just over 10 minutes
later, Macala scored on a rebound to increase the Husky lead to 3-0.
Sciocchetti was able to prevent freshman Victor Borggren (Malmo,
Sweden) from scoring on a bicycle kick, but the rebound fell right
onto the foot of Macala who then pushed it to the back of the net.
Macala scored his third goal for the hat trick on a header at 37:34.
Senior William Osorio (Miami, Fla.) sent the ball in front of the net
on a corner kick. A Spider defender tried to head it away from the
net, but Macala was able to then send it into the goal to give the
Huskies a 4-0 lead, where the score would stand as final.
Connecticut out-shot Richmond 10-5, and held the Spiders to only one
shot on goal. UConn also led in corner kicks 6-2.
The Huskies will next take on UC Santa Barbara to complete the UConn
adidas Soccer Classic 7:00 p.m. on Saturday at Morrone Stadium. That
game will be proceeded by Richmond facing Seton Hall at 4:30 p.m.
