The University
of California-Santa Barbara (4-0-0) edged the University of
Connecticut men's soccer team (1-3-0), 1-0, in front of a crowd of
3,976 at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium Saturday night. The contest was the
concluding game of the UConn adidas Soccer Classic, with UCSB
finishing 2-0, the Huskies and Seton Hall both at 1-1 and Richmond
going 0-2.
The teams were deadlocked in a scoreless tie until the 54th minute, when
forward Drew McAthy of the Gauchos drove a shot past UConn keeper Geoffrey
Anatole (Sharon, Mass.) off a feed from forward Neil Jones, with a second assist
awarded to defender Jon Apilado.
UCSB came close to making it a 2-0 advantage just over a minute later, but
Anatole was able to turn aside a point blank shot by Andrew Proctor at 55:17 and
a following rebound. Anatole went on to make a total of three saves in the
contest.
The Huskies had several good chances to get on the board, but many of the
attempts went just wide of the net as they were only able to put two of 11 shots
on goal.
Shots were even between the teams at 11 apiece and corner kicks were 2-0 in
favor of UConn. The game proved to be a physical one as the teams combined for
22 fouls and seven cautions, with five yellow cards being issued to UC Santa
Barbara and two for Connecticut.
The Huskies take the field again on Wednesday, Sept. 15th when they host
Saint Peter’s at 7:00 p.m.
