JAMAICA, N.Y. (Oct. 9)— St. John’s
(7-3-2, 4-1-1 BE) edged the University of Connecticut (5-4-2, 2-1-1 BE) men’s
soccer team, 1-0, in BIG EAST action at Belson Stadium on Saturday evening. St.
John's is currently ranked No. 13 in the country by the National Soccer Coaches
Association of America.The
lone goal of the contest was scored by Red Storm midfielder Andre Shmid as he capitalized on a defensive miscue by the Huskies and sent the ball sailing into
the back of UConn’s goal.
In the 13th minute of the first half, St. John’s pressured with its first quality
opportunity of the contest, but junior goalkeeper Adam Schuerman (Brookfield,
Wis.) made a diving save on Andrei Gotsmanov’s shot from the top of the box.
Then the Huskies threatened two minutes later as Chukwudi Chijindu (Fontana,
Calif.) make a charge up the field but sent the ball just wide of the far post.
Both teams made several other offensive charges in the first, but the contest
remained scoreless going into the intermission.
The Red Storm outshot the Huskies 11-4 and led 7-1 in corner kicks.
UConn returns home on Tuesday, October 12, to face Boston University at 7:00
p.m.
