SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. (Oct. 23) – The University of Connecticut men’s soccer team fell to Seton Hall by a score of 2-0 Saturday afternoon in South Orange, N.J. With the loss, UConn is now 7-6-2 overall (3-3-1 BIG EAST). Seton Hall improves to 10-5-1 overall (5-4-0 BIG EAST).

Seton Hall opened the scoring in the first half at the 16:29 mark. Pirate Sasha Kljestan blasted the ball across the box and over Husky keeper Adam Schuerman (Brookfield, Wis.) into the upper right corner of the net to give Seton Hall a 1-0 lead.

With 20 minutes remaining in the first half, UConn had a good scoring chance with Steve Sealy (St. James, Trinidad) being fed the ball right in front of the net by Bonginkosi Macala (Pretoria, South Africa). With Pirate keeper Ian Joyce down, Sealy fired the ball towards the goal only to have it tapped out by the Seton Hall defense just before crossing the goal line. Stephen Arias (Bakersfield, Calif.) also had a scoring opportunity at 38:30, but shot the ball just over the net from 18 yards out as the Pirates took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

The Huskies had quality chances to get on the board in the second half, but were not able to get anything in goal. Macala, positioned right in front of the net, headed the ball just wide of the net with 28 minutes remaining in the game. The Pirates increased their lead at 72:18 on a goal by Mark Pedreiras, who tucked the ball into the upper left corner to move the score to 2-0. With the clock winding down, freshman Julius James (Maloney Gardens, Trinidad) shot the ball in a last-stitch scoring effort, but Joyce saved it to preserve the shutout.

Seton Hall had a 13-10 advantage in shots over UConn, with both goalkeepers collecting three saves. The Huskies tallied 14 fouls to the Pirates’ 10.
