Men's Soccer Defeats Providence, 2-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Nov. 2) - The University of Connecticut men's soccer
team concluded its regular season schedule with a 2-1 victory over
Providence on Tuesday afternoon in Providence, R.I. With the win,
UConn moves its record to 9-7-2 and completed BIG EAST play with a
5-4-1 mark. Providence finished its season 0-16-0 (0-10-0 BIG EAST).
The game was scoreless through the first half. With 13:30 remaining in
the first, Easton Wilson (Hartford, Conn.) registered the first shot
on goal of the game, one that was stopped by Friars keeper Jeff
Newman. UConn held a slight advantage, 3-2, in shots going into
halftime.
Scoring opened at the 57:42 mark, when Steve Sealy (St. James,
Trinidad) collected his second goal of the season. Freshman Bonginkosi
Macala (Pretoria, South Africa) passed the ball towards the front of
the net to set up Sealy right in front of the Friar goal. Sealy
knocked the ball into the lower left corner to give the Huskies a 1-0
lead.
Providence quickly knotted the game at 62:26 when Derek Nobrega kicked
in the ball during a scramble in front of the UConn net. With Husky
keeper Adam Schuerman (Brookfield, Wis.) down from making a save,
Nobrega lifted the ball to score and tie the game at 1-1.
With the game winding down, the Huskies made a charge down the field.
Wilson fired a shot on goal that was tapped away by Newman. Macala got
the rebound and crossed it over to fellow freshman Chukwudi Chijindu
(Fontana, Calif.) who shot it into the lower right corner at 74:20 to
give the Huskies the 2-1 win. The goal was Chijindu's fifth goal of
the season, tying him with Macala for the team lead.
For the game, Connecticut had a 10-8 advantage in shots. Both teams
tallied three corner kicks with Providence called for 14 fouls to
UConn's 12. Schuerman made four saves for his sixth victory of the
season.
The Huskies will next play Boston College in the BIG EAST
Quarterfinals on Sunday, Nov. 7 in Newton, Mass.
