NEWTON,
Mass. (Nov. 7) –
With a goal in the 86th minute, the sixth-seeded University of Connecticut men’s
soccer team upset third-seeded Boston College, defeating the Eagles, 1-0, in BIG
EAST Quarterfinal action on Sunday afternoon. UConn improves to 10-7-2 overall
and advances to the conference semifinals while BC, currently ranked eighth in
the NSCAA/adidas poll, drops to 12-4-2 on the year.
The Eagles pressured early in the first as Charlie Davies launched a shot
that hit the right goal post, but the Huskies’ defense managed to shut down
Boston College as BC managed only one shot on net in the entire contest.
Sophomore Steve Sealy (St. James, Trinidad) broke the scoreless
stalemate with his third of the year at 85:08 from junior Drew Brown
(Middletown, Conn.). Brown fed the ball from the right side of the box and Sealy
tipped it in low past Boston College goalkeeper Issey Maholo, which proved to be
all UConn would need to advance to the next round of the BIG EAST Tournament.
Connecticut outshot Boston College, 14-11 and also held a 6-2 advantage in
corner kicks.
The Huskies next travel to Piscataway, N.J. to face seventh-seeded West
Virginia in the first match of the BIG EAST Semifinals on Friday, Nov. 12th at
Yurcak Field. |
