PISCATAWAY, N.J.
(Nov. 12) – The University of
Connecticut men’s soccer team shutout West Virginia, 1-0 in BIG EAST Semifinal
action on Friday evening to advance to the conference championship on Sunday.
UConn improves to 11-7-2 while the Mountaineers fall to 12-7-1.
The Huskies pressured
early as sophomore Moshe Shalchon’s (Rishon Lezioh, Israel) bicycle kick
hit the crossbar and came back out to classmate Steve Sealy (St. James,
Trinidad). Sealy then fired the ball into the back of the net at the 3:50 mark,
giving UConn a 1-0 advantage. Connecticut’s offense continued relentlessly as
freshman Bonginkosi Macala (Pretoria, South Africa) headed a shot
off the crossbar just minutes later.
Sealy’s goal would be
all the Huskies would need as the UConn defense shut down West Virginia and
picked up the teams’ seventh shutout of the season, not allowing a shot on goal
in the contest. In overall shots, Connecticut posted a 10-5 advantage and led
6-4 in corner kicks.
Sixth-seeded UConn
will face No. 8 Seton Hall in the championship game on Sunday, Nov. 14, at Yurcak
Field in Piscataway, N.J. at 12:00 p.m. The match will be televised live on College
Sports Television (CSTV), Madison Square Garden Network (MSG) and a delayed
broadcast will appear on Fox Sports New England at 2:00 p.m. |
